Thieving scum

My work van got broken into last weekend and emptied of all my power tools.
I'm still noticing things now that are gone when I go to use them. The window they smashed was covered by insurance but none of my tools where.

It irritates me so much that people are out here trying to make a honest living and there's scumbags that think it's fine to take that away from us. Without tools I can't work.

Me and my partner found out we're expecting our first child a few months ago and I've been working 7 days a week long hours to build a baby fund up, now all of that had to be spent replacing tools.

I've been emptying my van each night now and taking stuff indoors, all takes time but I can't allow them to take them again.

I've heard that once a van gets broken into, it's common for them to wait a month or two and then do the same van again, knowing full well that whoevers van it is will have to replace them and they will get their hands on some more by breaking in!

Ps. If you're in the building trade, it may take a extra 20 mins in the morning and evening but it's just so worth unloading every night!

Being a victim of theft sucks but when the theft also affects your ability to make a living, thats plain awful

Sorry to hear that mate, it's not nice to happen to anyone but when you need your tools for work it mucks that up as well.

Had a few mates getting their vans done over, a common one is the key fob jammer and just come back later and empty the van while you're in bed.

I don't empty my van at night but reverse up to the garage and as it's on a slope they'd have to break into the front and either start it or tow it before being able to get in the back plus I've got CCTV on it.

Every night you should fill the van with boxes that appear to be new high value tools. Inside put several glitter bombs.

Not sure if you're a homeowner, but if you are, try your HO policy. There could be something in there about personal property loss.

I think you could be right. They'll probably come back. Especially if the first heist was big.

If you can't find a garage to rent, better empty it everynight. Might also want to leave the door unlocked. Might save the hassle of a broke window.

Sorry to hear that. As a kid of a carpenter who worked out of a van/truck every day we had to deal with this numerous times. Even once in the middle of the day on a job site!

Is there any way you can get insurance on the tools at all?? If not in the house every night and like Rich said, leave the doors unlocked. That way if they come back it's less to clean up.

I would recommend installing a camera in the car. One of those infra red motion activated.
Another option would be a remote controlled alarm that notifies the remote of a breaking.

The premiums on insurance makes it almost not worth it. Plus they want original receipts from purchase on tools I've had for a few years.

Sorry to hear about the tools and I agree with others on the sentiments about thieves. I hope they get caught. I don't know if you have pawn shops around, but I would at least check it out to see if anyone recently pawned the tools.

Very sorry to hear about this... I often think it is just pure luck my tools have never been stolen.

It happens often here in Aus. And when it happens to a friend, we pool together and loan/give old or unused tools until the friend is back on their feet. Any tradie feels the pain of stolen tools.

Ask your friends.

Clients don't understand... when they pay you for a project, the money isn't all sweet sweet profit. So much of it is used for buying/replacing tools.
