The Exorcist scared the shit out of me as well. I think it was because no one really went to that extreme at the time.

There is no second place for me as horror films just don't scare me.

I just finished the shining audio book and watched the movie again.

If you enjoy the shining, you should watch Room 237.

Goes a little to far in the "analysis" but it's a fun watch.

There are a slew of films I've only read about and will likely never watch because of how disturbing they are..I mean there are some REALLY REALLY sick movies out there that can hardly be called "art". I'm hesitant to even list them as I fear this thread could be locked.

The Shining was a decent movie but you should read the book. I read it in my early 20s and it scared the crap out of me. I actually slept with the light on in an adjoining room for a few nights while reading that book.

Now that I’m older scary movies don’t really scare me though. I was IT recently and enjoyed it but it didn’t really scare me.

Friday The Thirteenth was made about 12 miles from my house. It may not be the scariest movie, but they have a showing of it every Friday the thirteenth in the theater shown briefly in the movie. Taking my daughter tonight.

I love horror movies and probably watch at least 2 a month. That said, I cannot watch Nightmare on Elm Street.

Story time: When I was 5 years old, I was in a tall building (I think courthouse) with my parents and two older brothers. My parents had to take care of something and left me in the care of my brothers (9 and 12). We ended up in the elevator and they wanted to go to the basement. Once there, the doors opened to a long, steamy, pipe riddled hallway that had red light bulbs for some reason. Well, they shoved me out and said "Freddy Kruger's down here" and closed the doors. At the time I was already scared of the movie character, but not overly so. By the time my brothers rode to the top, then down again that changed. To this day, I cannot even see a Freddy Kruger mask without having a slight panic attack. My mom said it seemed like it was a full week before I could sleep through the night. It was different time then, so my brothers got the belt. I got a lifetime of having an irrational fear.

The Exorcist is probably #1 but Nightmare On Elm Street shook me up a bit as a kid.

but my favorite is Event Horizon... the visuals are absolutely amazing. Crap that reminds me, I need to get that on Blue Ray so I can view the movie in all it's goryness on my projector... I only have the DVD.

While not a horror film, JAWS was the first rated R movie I ever saw (9 years old) and we lived right on the water (puget sound) when it came out. I was afraid to go into the water for some time after that. About the same time a 14 foot shark had died and washed ashore which scared the **** out of all the kids in the hood. It was a rare anomaly for a shark of that size to be in the waters in this region which added to the mystique...

My wife loves horror flicks. I like in no particular order: the Shining, early Saw movies, Alien(s), Omen, Exorcist, Psycho, Misery, House of 1000 Corpses, Devils Rejects, Silence of the Lambs, The Ring, Final Destination for cheesy horror, Re Animator cheesy horror, Nightmare on Elm Street, Carrie, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I sure I missed some.

I don’t really watch horror movies, but when I was about 5-6, I watched The Birds and the scene where the birds pecked the guys eyes out scared the shit out of me, hahaha. That scene haunted me for a long time.

New horror movies like Saw and Hostel are just stupid, IMO.

Not a big fan of horror films but one stands out as a precursor to the modern day standard bearers. Black Christmas filmed in 1974. Just freaked me out. Runner up would be SCTV's "3D House of Slave Chicks" ooohhhh very scary.

After growing up on a steady diet of Hammer films I was fairly acclimatised to all sorts of horror by the time such classics as 'the Exorcist' and 'the Shining' came out. And the later slasher and jump scare genres never really phased me.

Except perhaps a couple of Japanese films. The original 'ring' and 'dark water' for example. the Swedish film 'let the right one in' was disturbing.

For some reason a b grade horror called 'Count Yorga' was the source of my childhood nightmares.

But the single film that brings a shiver down my spine even now, and had me hiding beneath the seats in the cinema was a Japanese film called 'the audition'.

But most recent most scary horror film was "paranormal activity" the original one. Some reason it felt very real to me like no other horror film has done.
