Advice on selling a coin collection

My father has a "coin" collection he amassed mostly during the 70's and 80's. It contains gold and silver and some novelty Franklin Mint collections (US President coins and those types of collections).

I have offered to help him sell it off slowly so he receives maximum value for what he has.

Does anyone have advice, suggestions or prior experience selling off coins and gold/ silver ingots and the like?

Should I buy a coin book of valuations? Just google each item and try to gauge condition, etc?
Where should I look to sell? eBay, coin forum/ websites?
Any and all help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

We have an expert amongst us. Send a PM to Numismatist. He's a rare coin appraiser and has given me advice before.

I might have to try whatever resources you come across... There is an old 1tonne safe in a basement in Anchorage, AK with 60 years of collected coins, stamps, Jim Beam collectable vessels and anything else my late grandfather thought would be valuable at some point in his life. Man was a MONSTER collector.

Google is a great place to start to get a feel for what has the most potential. Contact a few coin dealers in your area; but ALWAYS get a second or third opinion. Oh and we ALWAYS love pictures...

Good luck!

Great! Thank you.

Luckily many of the Franklin Mint type collections are sealed or protected and I assume "Mint". As far as the ones that aren't, not sure where to get graded etc.

I'll check around and shoot Numismatist a message.
