Skiing, What to wear with this jacket?

So my inlaws bought me this jacket for my first skiing trip a while ago. Its 100% waterproof but no thermal properties at all. Now what do I wear underneath? Sweatshirt, fleece, vest, thermal underwear? All or some combination. It may be the wrong jacket to ski in the first place but I'm stuck with it as it was gift and I dont want to disappoint them by not showing up with it on the slopes.

Depends on how cold it will be.

You will likely need a warm wool base layer, like a Smartwool 250 midweight.
Then you would a mid layer. Since this jacket is super light I would suggest a mid-heavy weight Polartec, as opposed to a light weight polartec.
And, in this case you may want to also wear a puffy vest or jacket on top of the fleece. Not usually needed if the jacket was more of a ski jacket. BTW, I never wear an Insulated ski jacket but i do wear a heavier jacket than the one you mention, which appears to be a rain jacket.

You may want to invest in a windproof polartec as this jacket does not appear to be windproof. My ski jackets are all essentially weather proof, meaning no wind or rain gets in. It makes a huge difference.
You need to think of your base layers as your ski jacket as this rain shell is nothing but a topping to what you are going to put under it.

No sweatshirt, NO COTTON.

Wear skis. Anything else is optional.

The jacket in your pic looks like a 'shell'. You might want to consider investing in a Gortex/down jacket with at least a 10F rating as there is a wind chill factor + you will not be remaining static in this activity. Besides, it's still wintertime.

As cruise_bone mentioned, avoid wearing cotton apparel. Once wet, the insulation factor is kaput.

Depends on the day. Skiing in good weather is hot business. You might be good in a t-shirt underneath or you might need the equivalent of a warm jacket underneath.

Is it big enough to wear cold weather liners and still allow you to move freely?

I used thermasilk as base, performance fabric t-neck, wool sweater and down vest for temps of 20° and up.

For lower temps, the problem is fitment since the bulk of what you’d need under a Medium Marmot would be compressed so much that insulating value is compromised.

Hope that helps.

Go for a good base layer like a smart wool or ice breaker. Then take 2 different weight mid layers. Usually I go with a thin pullover and a heavier fleece for cold days. Skiing works up a lot of sweat. Don’t let yourself get cold and wet

I was about to say that Columbia is a rain jacket not a ski jacket or shell.

The Marmot is a nice ski jacket shell! Do you have a medium puffer insulator (down) you can wear under that? That’s what you would normally do OR a good mid layer and base layer preferably ones made for skiing.

The Marmot is nice and I’d wear that no prob.

Hey great thats a relief and sorry for the confusion.
To answer your Q I bought some heatgear underwear from Uniqlo

https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/men/heattech-collection

and I also have one of these that my wife has "borrowed" that I shall try to reclaim

Funny, I use the heattech from Uniqlo as a base layer. Very toasty. You can get away with the light Uniqlo puffer as mid layer but I’d personally bring a wool sweater or something like that with you just in case to wear between the puffer and base layer. Sounds like you’ve mustered up enough combinations to have fun! Waterproof gloves are also pretty important.

I ski almost every day in beautiful Minnesota in temps ranging from 25 degrees F to -25 degrees below zero. The key to daily comfort is layering, as mentioned several times above. On a 10 degree F day, I will wear a wicking Patagonia lightweight underwear layer over Virus compression pants. A pair of Patagonia Goretex duty pants. A fleece quarter zip shirt layer over the underwear shirt. The fleece thickness varies with temperature. I wear a Patagonia down sweater, then my duty jacket. I add or subtract depending on my level of exertion or temp changes. I have a Marmot Goretex shell that I've used for over 20 years, and it is bomb-proof. Very durable.

ok great info Thanks all for chiming in. The rest I took the liberty of gathering myself. Ordered these but they havent arrived yet

Pants

Gloves

The Boots and Skis I'm renting so didnt do anything there. I'm borrowing a set of goggles and none of the inlaws wear a helmet so I wont be either. Going to play the helmet by ear as I'm a motorcyclist and love my helmet so may get one if I feel its necessary.

Awesome you’re going to have so much fun.

A helmet is a good idea, I personally won’t ski without one. You can rent one when you get your skis.

Have fun!!

You’re probably going to have something on your head to keep warm anyway... a decent helmet isn’t uncomfortable.

If you haven’t bought gloves yet, I highly recommend these from Swany...

The only people who don't wear helmets these days are the old school skiers who grew up without them. I bought my first helmet during a brutal cold spell just to keep warmer. I've never skis without since.

As a ski patrol director, I've seen helmets prevent literally hundreds of serious head injuries. Consider wearing one.

If you want to SKI, it's a very good way.

If you want a rain shell, it's WAY too much jacket for that.

My brother has those and loves them.
I have them in the All leather version, both in Glove and Mitten form.
They are my most disappointing ski gear and the tips of my fingers are the only thing that gets cold, and it doesn't take a lot.

Interesting. I wear mine skiing, but have also used them on motorcycle and snowmobile. Always toasty.

Sorry they didn’t work out for you.

Oh, I still use them!
I can't find anything better.

Maybe I just have a finger circulation issue.

Good advice.

I'd also add a next of kin info sewn in and a medic alert bracelet with blood type.

Just based on personal experience on a double black diamond intro to skiing.

Get yourself a good base layer (long underwear top/bottoms, wool or polypropylene, NOT cotton) and midlayer (medium weight puffer jacket, preferable not down) for underneath your new shell. Layering is the best strategy. Have fun!
