Savannah GA - where to stay?

So going to visit Savannah for a few days around Easter. Headed up from Naples and need somewhere to stash the wife and kiddies while I head over to Augusta to enjoy the Masters for a day. Seems like the logical place since it's far enough away that it won't have Augusta people gumming up the hotels and it's a city I've wanted to visit for quite some time.
SO next question - any suggestions on hotels or areas? Want stuff around like restaurants/shopping within walking distance since I'll be taking the truck for the day to watch golf. Kids are 3 and 6.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I stayed at the Marriott in Savannah when my niece graduated from SSAD several years ago. Nice hotel right on the river and definitely walking distance to just about everything. But, with that said, it’s a very small town and 2 days there would be, for me at least, enough.
When I went to the Masters in 2004 I drove over from Hilton Head Island. Much more to do there, but not as historical as Savannah.
With young children I’d suggest staying on the beach in Hilton Head. I like the South Forest Beach area due to its “walk-ability”.

What kind of a Hotel are you looking for?
Mansion on Forsyth Park is wonderful and the Park
is directly across the street , kids can play there ...
Planters inn is more less very near within waking
distance of restaurants, shops , the river and just lovely
walking scenery . Historic buildings and many other attractions
also within walking distance... it’s more less a boutique hotel !

My favorite:

http://1790restaurant.com

It has a very limited number of rooms. Worth the trouble.

If you want some old world southern charm without the big hotel atmosphere there's only one place in my books. The Planter's Inn. www.plantersinnsavannah.com/

Sits across from Reynolds Square in the middle of everything including right next to The Olde Pink House one of the best restaurants in the area with a cool bar downstairs. Also Chef Sean Brock has just opened another Husk in Savannah. Also walking distance.

I visit Savannah from time to time and the most important thing (to me anyway) is being on the Riverwalk and having a view. I would stay in the Marriott Riverfront as the Hyatt Regency isn't much nicer and double the price.

I stayed on the way back from Naples as well and chose the Westin across the river mainly because they took my dog and the price was right. Turns out it was awesome for a short stay because you get to ride this cool ferry across to downtown! They even let you bring a pint out of the pub for the road lol

My wife enjoyed the southern sweets
