Subaru's are strictly utilitarian vehicles and relatively well-made/safe. We're on a two-year lease program and keep coming back (on #3 now). Our only experience is with the Outback model.

In regards to Oldsmobile vs Toyota. Not from the quality standpoint but more from the easily perceived reserved/non-confrontational driver persona (regardless of age differentials). It has nothing to do with any lifestyle/political leanings, more along the lines of an overgeneralized observation on my part. Like how many dynamic Camry owners/drivers do you know of? Of course NASCAR is an exception.

Back in the late 1980s, a neighborhood kid had a '72 Gremlin and he did something to enhance its overall performance. His 'exhibition' style of reckless driving was akin to today's side-show drivers and he had a 304/V-8 engine in his.

Today he is a forty-something father of two who vehemently denies any connection to this adolescent automotive activity.

Gotta love those Gen Xers who eventually matured and moved on.

BC, my wife and I had a Volvo 240 DL as well. You describe it perfectly and yet for some strange reason, whenever I drove her car, it made me smile....

Interesting to note, when you watch movies from just about any era there always seems to be a Volvo 240 in it

Kia Spectra. It was depressing to even type that. My first car with an AUX jack, though. So I guess that was a redeeming quality. Also had okay gas mileage and a 10yr warranty. Boring incarnate.

You are so 'right-on' in your reflections/insights Brian. The 240 was a 'happy car' from the standpoint of it being a mellow ride.

Had we gotten a wagon instead of the sedan, it might still be with us today as those older Volvos can seemingly run forever.

I had a Subaru Forester rental for about a week after my car was rear ended and I hated everything about that miserable pile of junk. It felt like a tin can with rock hard seats and a bouncy ride. If you lived in the mountains at the end of a two mile long dirt road it would probably be the perfect car but living in SoCal with a 30 mile commute it was rubbish.

Mercedes G Wagon is a boring drive, not the attention that you get when you drive it of course, but the way it performs is like driving a jeep and I've never been a fan of a jeep either (no offense to those Wrangler fans out there). :)

The Forrester is kind of a mini-SUV and a compromise of sorts. The Outback has a longer wheelbase and is more substantial in terms of overall weight and size although the Forrester is lightly taller. Chances are you would have preferred the Outback over the Forrester.

She's changing it in June and I'm hoping she goes for something a bit more, um, entertaining.

I am only 20 so I haven't had much experience with other cars but the most boring was my BMW 335i. The manifestation of a lack of attention for quality as well as performance. I have a C63S as my daily driver for university now and never looked back

Honestly, some of your "worst" cars are really not as bad as you think. Worst car is a BMW 335i!?

Here's mine: Perodua Kancil, based off another car (Daihatsu Mira?). Tiny 660cc motor which made 30hp/49Nm when new, mated to a 5-speed manual. 0-100km/h in... well, depends on ground elevation. Vmax at 120km/h on a downhill run.

There are a lot of boring cars around so I guess a fair proportion of the population like "boring".
I'd define "boring" as poor performance, unresponsive handling and an automatic transmission - but that's just me - I'm a "car guy".
My wife would say boring is good as she is never going to want to drive in a spirited manner. For her reliability is everything.
Most boring car? Probably a 'People Mover' of some sort - maybe a Kia Carnival.

LOL, totally agree and a total POS. My best friend's Dad gave him a new K car convertible with the "wood grain" side panels. His Dad owned a Lincoln dealership and took a new one in on trade so thought it would be fun for us to have a top down car for the summer. I think it was our junior year HS. Thing only have a couple thousand on it and we were driving down the freeway and one of the wood grain panels literally flew off. The car just fell apart

My dad had one. Something was always broken. It had no power and barely got you where you wanted to go. Plus, it was ugly inside and out. Boring to drive, ugly, and unreliable. The car that saved Chrystler.

There use to be a time when people actually "drove". They were involved, watched the road, paid attention to what was going on around them. They were drivers.

Today, its become a video game. Ive seen young ladies putting on make-up and TEXTING with their hand on the top of the wheel. People crank up the music so loud they can't hear the car sounds around them. If it were legal, I am sure people would watch movies from the driver's seat.

They are not longer involved in driving, but on auto pilot hoping nothing jumps out in front of them. Even then, they will blames something else - they had a bad childhood or whatever.

It began with automatics, then airbags, no need to worry about dying so much, the airbag will save your life. Traction control, don't worry about spinning, the safety device will save you. Crank up the tunes, no one cares Answer the phone, who cares about laws and distractions,

Automated cars will be VERY popular in the US. VERY Popular. People don't want to drive, they want to be served. They want to be pampered.

And they got better things to do then worrying about the road.

My last Bimmer was standard, as were all my cars, but just couldn't hack the shifting anymore, getting old enough now that leg pain was getting to me and traffic was making it boring essentially shifting between 1st and occasionally 3rd, but totally get what you mean.

The new Bimmer 550i is automatic, with paddles if I want, but a big change, and frankly, a much appreciated one, for city driving at least.

agree. If the car has power and handles well, mashing down hard on the right pedal will make for a fun ride.
