Bucket List - ride up a volcano...
Every time I have visited Maui, I have always wanted to cycle UP the Haleakala volcano. It is a 10,000 foot climb over 36 miles. Unfortunately, we were always visiting in winter when my conditioning level was suboptimal.
We are going this June and I was lucky to be able to sign up for an organized ride (race for others) to the top. http://cycletothesun.com I now have five months to get ready. I really need help from you guys by calling me to task when I post in any food and wine threads about how gluttonously I eat and drink. Must lose 10 pounds. We live in Colorado and I climb tons during the summer so this should be a piece of cake, especially if I spend June training at my mountain condo, which sits at 8,700 feet. I cannot let myself get beat by a bunch of sea level dwellers. I recall a few members have done this climb before and would love to hear about their rides.

I did this climb in a rental car. It was not happy near the top. I will be happy to lean in and remind you that time is short.

I was very fortunate to tag along on a hunt on private land at the very top of Haleakala. Hunting property called KAPU with just a few members. Drove up in the dark and then watched the sun come up over the island of Hawaii, clouds below us. Quite the experience to say the least. I actually started to weep. Looked at my buddy and told him I don't know why I am crying. He said I was not the first grown man to do so up there.......very spiritual.

Very jealous. I’d love to cycle this. It would knock El Teide off the top as my longest continual climb on Strava.
