A Fish Can't Give You Love -or- Trade Explorer for Submariner
My ex-wife wanted a cat. I told her we can get a fish. She said "A Fish Can't Give You Love."
I'm starting to feel the same way about my 214270, now that I've had my Omega Speedmaster for a bit. I like actually interacting with my Speedy. I like to wind it. I like to use the Chrono - and I use it more than I ever imagined I would. And I enjoy looking at it. But "looking at it" is all I can do with my 214270, and that's all the love we'll ever have. Is the Explorer my fish that I like to look at, but it can't give me love back? It can't respond to me like a Chronograph or Diver's Bezel. If I had a Submariner, I could engage it to measure elapsed time. And I would also enjoy looking at it. Another Rolex option, I could engage the GMT, but I really don't need GMT - I don't mindf*ck myself when I'm in a different timezone. And I don't need to check time at the home office back East. The SkyDweller and YachtMonster are not for me. So maybe a Sub is in my future. I've learned to enjoy an interactive relationship with my Speedy. I want that love too with my Rolex. But I can't afford two watches, nor do I want to go any further down the road toward being a collector. I don't have much disposable income and I'd like to use it get out an enjoy life a bit - with one of these fine watches to love to look at and interact. |

Yeah, if you don't love that Exp I, let her go. I tried to years ago. Lovely watch, but I couldn't stop looking for the date. :)

If you are only looking for the One Watch, what's wrong with the Speedy? It's a fine piece that you already have, and you know you enjoy. That said, I'll stoke the fire for wanting something else by way of my own story. You mentioned being on the honeymoon with the 116610LN. I got mine in 2016 too, so you might say I'm also on the honeymoon. But it goes deeper than that. As of 2010, I had never paid attention to Rolex before, but in the fall of that year I just happened to put on License to Kill with Timothy Dalton, and was curious about the watch he wore in the movie. In doing some research, I discovered two things: (1) Dalton wore a then newly-released Rolex 16610LN, and (2) its successor had just been released and was starting to arrive at dealers' shops. Given how cool Dalton's watch looked (so much better than the Omegas Brosnan and Craig wore), I went right out and tried on the newer version at a nearby AD. It was love at first sight, but I didn't buy it, because, frankly, I was in law school and didn't have the money. But it became the watch against which I measured all others. I even literally had dreams about the smooth bezel action. Still, I put off buying it for six years, because, even when I was more flush, the price seemed too much to spend on a watch. So instead, I ended up spending much more by buying other, less expensive watches in an attempt to scratch the Submariner itch, which I would invariably flip, take a loss on, and continue to throw good money after bad. Late in 2016, I finally sucked it up and laid out the cash on the Sub, and I haven't regretted it one bit. It might still be a honeymoon, but the honeymoons on every other watch I've owned ended way sooner. I still have another watch that I didn't flip (an Omega), but it doesn't get much wrist time. I also consider flipping the Omega for another Rolex that might pair better with the Sub, but I realize there probably isn't another watch I would like as well, which keeps me from pulling the trigger. Ultimately, I know the best I could have is on my wrist. That's when you know you love a watch. But cats are awesome, too. |

I love my Speedmaster Pro. I bought a 214270, wore it for a month, and sold it to fund a Submariner 114060 (which is supposedly in the mail to me and seems to be lost, but let's not discuss right now, please...).
The 214270 is a lovely watch, and I'll have another some day, but I realized after wearing it for a while that, this time, I was looking for a Rolex with just a bit more "oomph". The 114060 seems to be just the ticket for me. Hopefully, I'll be able to confirm to you in a day or two. Pray that the package is found, please! |
