My New Truck Cost Three Times what my Dad Paid for his House

I'm sure he wouldn't have believed it back then if someone told him a new pickup truck would cost 55k. Of course, that was 1965, but still......

Oh, and it's not a Lincoln or a Cadillac.....just a GMC. (Some of their models were approaching 80k!)

not exactly... a house bought for 55k in 1965 is the same as buying a $430k house today. Inflation. The truck cost no where near what his house did.

In reverse that 55k truck is the same as spending 7k for one in 1965

I constantly argue with my grandma about this

Well, Voltaire already said that all fiat currencies tend towards their intrinsic value (zero). But all jokes aside, inflation is by no means all bad.

What do you mean just a GMC??

They are great trucks!! My wife just picked up a 2018 Denali 2500 and it’s gorgeous.

Congrats on your new truck!!

Introduction of the club cab changed everything for pick up truck sales. Before that they couldn't give them away half the time.

Yep. It has got to a point of insanity.

My 2015 Silverado High Country was $4000 or so less than my 2017. Virtually the same truck. The new one was $56,000 or so. The new F150 Limited I looked at was $67,000.

Chevy is redesigning their trucks for 2019 and I am sure they will get up there with the Fords. This may be my last truck. At $70k I go back to a big body Lexus SUV.

1965 was a very, very good year! No Lincoln, no Cadillac....just a Plymouth

(not mine BTW)

The only way I'll be able to spend $60k+ on a vehicle and still be practical.

My dad paid $13,500 for his first house in 1964. He bought a new GTO in 66...under $3,000. Wish he still had that GTO...red, 6 pack...

The part that bothers me the most is how much and fast they depreciate.

The prices are outrageous. I suspect that's why so many people perpetually lease.

But not nearly as much as a car. Bought my son a 2014 GMC Sierra when he turned 16 it had 20000 miles on it and I Paid 35000 he was rear ended last year in that truck and it was totaled. It had 45000 on the odometer and the Insurance company paid me $34000. That is holding value pretty good I thought.
