Dress Code

Curious what you guys all wear to work.

In my 20+ years in the work force, I’ve seen the dress code get very lax.

I started at PricewaterhouseCoopers. In the beginning it was shirt and tie everyday. Then it went to casual Friday’s. Then things went to business casual daily.

These days, I still typically dress mostly business casual wearing khakis and a tucked in button down. However, I think I’m switching to untuckit. A great new product line of shirts made to be worn untucked.

I’m noticing more and more that the majority of my customers are in jeans, sneakers, khakis and even shorts on some days. I see people in T-shirt’s all the time.

It’s changed significantly and I’m thinking it’s time I got a bit more relaxed. I’ll keep a good shirt and a jacket in the office in case I need to throw something on.

So I’m curious what all you guys do, and have been seeing based on your own industry and experience.

I'm client facing in finance. 75% of the time I am suit and tie. If I am seeing a client that prefers a more casual attire, I will wear a button down, tie, and a v neck sweater over it. Pants are always pressed. Shoes are always leather in black or brown. The days of cufflinks are dwindling down for me.

Usually dress shirt with tie and slacks or chinos, colder weather I add a merino pullover sweater. Business casual is my dress code.

Relaxed.

Polo shirt and chinos ect. Sometimes I have to go out into the plant so I have to wear all the protective kit also.

Jeans and sneakers are cool on Fridays.

Our company dress code is business casual but I work in Accounting and never meet customers so I usually dress a bit more casual than that. Jeans and a polo shirt with Sperry Topsiders and a Rolex on my wrist of course. ;)

Sometimes I'll wear khakis with a button down shirt and a pair of Allen Edmonds Oxfords but that is about as dressed up as I get.

Most days a 1.5 or 3mm open cell wetsuit.

For 23 years in the Air Force I wore a flight suit just about every day.

Now as a civilian contractor on an Air Force bombing range, I'm in jeans, a t-shirt and steel-toed boots. And of course one of my trusty Rolex watches!

Now retired since 2009, but I was GM at a global network company with customer-facing engineers and me taking the critical meets. My embedded SE's dressed at the same level that the customer wore to work - and appropriate for the geography. My China team did not wear the same as my Seattle team for example.

But in our corporate HQ offices I simply asked them to wear the attire appropriate for their aspiration position. If they wanted to be a VP one day, then "look like it" was my advice. It was their career impression to make - not my choice. If you wanted to be caged in the NOC, then wear jeans and don't shave... [casting no aspersions - just that our NOCs were veeerrrryyy casual sometime after 1999...]

I was suit & tie because at any moment I could be in the boardroom. That was then - this is now of course. I'm in sweats right now working this MacBook

Retired. Polo shirts and shorts in the summer. Polo shirts with jeans in the winter. Asics running shoes pretty much everyday 365. Hair length, facial hair all my choice. Love it!

It's my life uniform.

Suit if I'm meeting clients.

I try to wear nice shoes.

Everyone (except me) wears scrubs. A long sleeve undershirt is required f necessary to cover tattoos. I'm shirt and tie.

I interact with my clients on a daily basis, but my business is industrial. Most of meetings take place in my office, but end with a facility tour. When I get board or upset, I try to hop in a front-end loader, forklift, bulldozer, etc. That being said, I ride a fine line between looking presentable and function around the jobsite. My normal office attire consist of chinos with a casual button down or dry-fit shirt, Patagonia/North Face style vest, some boots, and my 16570 Polar.

Anything with a paint spot or stain goes in the trash. Hair and beard always well maintained. Shirt always tucked in.

More and more casual as I age. Daily suit and tie for years. Biz casual these days. Button down oxfords, chinos, loafers or boat shoes, and a casual suit jacket. Generally, I tuck in my shirts, but lately been going untucked more often. A lot of sweaters over turtlenecks or button downs and boots in the winter. Somewhat of an old "preppy" I guess.

I checked out untuckit too. Be curious to hear your impressions if you order something.

Client-facing Technology consultant here at one of the largest consulting firms in the globe. Similar to 77T's insight, our recommendation is to dress as per client dress codes, making sure to be be geographically aware as well.

However, my current client is relatively relaxed, and doesn't have any real formal dress code. So, I wear a suit (no tie) everyday lol! Dress to impress at work IMO

Work attire is usually dark jeans or Chinos with a button down shirt. Shoes are usually either boots or oxfords.

I'm 26 years old working as a network administrator (IT). It was always business casual. Even tennis shoes with khaki's but always a collared shirt unless I'm doing hands on labor.

However, within the last 4 months? I've started dressing up on Wednesday's, either a tie or suit and tie. Thursday's I generally wear one of my custom collared shirts with khaki's and dress shoes.

Since I want to move up in the world, I'm trying to dress for the position I want. (As quoted above). And the amount of compliments I receive when I 'dress up' makes it worth it as well.

My company is in the financial services industry but our direct clients are financial advisors rather than the end client so we are jeans and golf shirts 99% of the time. Only time I'm in a suit is if I'm speaking at conferences but no tie.

Oil and Gas, drilling services.- 80% of the time: jeans and shirt, tucked in. 19.9% chinos (dockers) with shirt tucked in when visiting clients or corporate meeting. 0.1% suit and tie. This has been for the last 15+ years.
