Sir Roger Bannister RIP
its with great sadness today we learn of the loss of Sir Roger Bannister a true athlete. RIP.
Incidentally, one of the stopwatches used to time Sir Roger Bannister's record-breaking four-minute mile sold at auction for a cool £20,000 (approximately $31,000) The silver Swiss chronometer was made by Nero Lemania, and features an outer second track for 30-seconds and a subsidiary dial with constant seconds and 30-minute register. |

May 6, 1954, Oxford University, one mile run in 3:59.4 ... if you think about it, the current record (I'm not sure exactly) isn't all that much faster. A little more than ten seconds, I think, and in much more advanced shoes. What an achievement ... and he quit running less than a year later.

Legend. As a runner I can't imagine the feeling of cracking 4 minutes. Running a 5k at under a 6 minute pace kills me. I think I could do 1 under 5 and stop but under 4 is just mind boggling. RIP good Sir.

More people have climbed Everest than have broken a 4 minute mile. He also never earned a penny from athletics. RIP.
