I'm finally doing it. After years of considering it, I'm getting my eyeballs updated. Hopefully no more glasses. I'll be able to wear any of my fancy sunglasses whenever I like.

And for only 1/2 a Patek... such a deal!

I think I'll celebrate by getting a new pair of sunglasses. :-)

Congrats Peter!!

I was in the chair all ready to go when the doc changed his mind on me. He was not comfortable with the thickness of my cornea and refused to chance my eyesight.

I would do a comercial with a testimony for him just for that.

I'm glad you told us about that, Peter. Now I can continue with my day.

Peter, I had mine done five four years ago and it's the closest thing to a modern day miracle I can imagine (having worn coke bottles since I was 12).

They can control the entire process except for how well and quickly you heal, which also takes into consideration your age and general health/fitness.

Thankfully I am a quick healer and of course, pretty fit. The day after my op, I was seeing 20-20 (both eyes were about -6), a week later I was seeing 20-15 and a month later I was seeign 20-10, which is where I've been since.

That's a good sign. Lesser doctors just see LASIK as easy money. My doctor was concerned about my thick optic nerves, so he had a glaucoma specialist examine me. He said it was not uncommon in very near-sighted people, and that although it is an indicator of possible risk for glaucoma later in life, it poses no barrier to my getting LASIK.

Thanks, John. I'm about -6 in both eyes too. I wore contacts since 1980, but as I've gotten older, I don't tolerate them as well. The main reason I'm finally getting it done is so that I can wear the sunglasses of my choice on the bike, without having to deal with contacts.

Right eye = -7, left eye = -6.5. Without contacts of glasses as blind as a bat. I wear contacts from October 1980. About 10 years ago, I had to wear glasses for about 2 years because of a condition with my eyes (still have a scar on the left cornea). Then my optician tipped me about a new kind of lenses, Bio Compatibles. Been wearing them since. 3 of my colleagues have had laser surgery now, all with success although with one it took a long time for the eyes to ‘set’.

Now for the even more serious part. I’m one of those persons who attract bad luck sometimes. The most common and well prepared things go wrong. Couple of examples: we had our blinds made to measure by a special shop. The guy who came by to do the measurements complimented us for this. “We see a lot of mistakes being made with measurements being done by customers. This is a good decision!” he said. When they arrived, they were 7 inches short and we had to wait another 3 weeks. Our ceramic hob went on the blink in 10 months (electronics fault), our side by side fridge was out of order for a year because of a rare defect within the insulation (we had to buy a small fridge to tie us over), when our first washing machine was delivered they let it drop from the truck and still tried to deliver it. I had to rush down to cancel the delivery, they didn’t expect that I watched the whole affair. After I had my vasectomy, the wound got infected in two days and I was brought to hospital on a Sunday to clean it up (ouch!), our stainless steel hot air oven went on the blink within 2 years but I could repair it myself, the list is endless. The stuff we buy is always supposed to be top grade and new. To no avail.

I’m afraid something goes wrong when I have laser surgery and that the effect is irreversible. I just don’t want to take the risk and I’m happy with my contacts.

I have horrible eyesight and have had 2 severe detached retinas( Both eyes involve invasive surgery).
Right now I have a -11 and a -10 ( Ouch) The 11 is misleading as that Eye is really buggered up from the shattered retina.
I have recently switched to some new "Pure Vision" contacts. They are by far the most comfortable lenses I have ever had( been wearing lenses for about 26 year) . I can sleep in these guys also. ( I only do that occassionally as I don't really need to see much when I'm sleeping)
I am not a candidate for Lazik. No sign of Cataracts yet, but I have been told, that once I develope them, I can get my "natural lenses" replaced with permanent imbedded contacts.
So that is something to look forward too ( sort of).
I have had many clients go through the Lazik and the like. All but one were extremely happy with the results. ( The one has Peters luck with just about everything).

That's a very good point, JJ. When I wear regular glasses, I can't get away with staring at oversized orbs so easily.

The results were excellent. One eye is a bit sharper than the other, but it'll be a couple of months before I'll know where they've really settled. As of Day 1, my vision was 20/25. I think the right eye is better than 20/20, but the left eye drags down the average.

I haven't had any trouble with dry eyes or night vision -- the most likely problems soon after surgery. I'm extremely happy with the way it's worked out for me. Sure beats spending the money on a wristwatch -- especially since I already have one.

BTW, I did some searching on the web, and found a couple of places that will do LASIK for $295 per eye -- about 1/10 of what I paid. I know some of you are always looking for the best deal, so if anyone's interested, there are great deals to be had. ;-)

Lasik for $295 per eye? Well, remember the old saw, "You get what you pay for." Would you trust someone who was going to operate on you for 1/10 the going rate?
