The ol' 3186, eh? Don't quote me, but I understand Rolex is fixing these, even outside of warranty.

Update…

It was the GMT lever. The local watchmaker (Who is in A.D.) won’t do it without a full overhaul. Out the door, $900.

Considering the watch was serviced a couple years ago and the failed part is right underneath the dial, is an overhaul really necessary or is he being unreasonable? Plus, considering this is a known issue from Rolex, the price seems a little high, no?

The price seems high if it is not being serviced by Rolex, fine line considering he is working out of an AD, but best i understand unless it goes to their Dallas or New York facility it is not considered a RSC service . Regarding the full service you likely hear the same story from most good watchmakers, if something broke they are likely to assume there could be more issues and want to do the full service.

My opinion of course, i am no watchmaker

Maybe if it’s a broad problem, see if rsc may fix free.

I think the OP's biggest problem may be the watch having been previously serviced by a non-RSC (given that it was 2014 but the spring wasn't replaced, which it sounds like it would have been had the RSC done the servicing).

There were previously some "RASC" out there (Rolex Authorized Service Center), such as Sutter's in Chicago, but I believe Rolex has ended those relationships (at least the one here in Chicago is no longer RASC). However, these places didn't necessarily proactively replace the spring, as I had mine serviced there in 2016 and they didn't do it (hence why it's at RSC NY right now). The good news is that RSC will stand behind these services, if done while they were still RASC (though 2014 is a bit out of the service warranty period).

Thanks for the info! How much did RSC NY quote you for the service?

No charge. Mine was still under service warranty by about a month.

***UPDATE***

First off, thank you all for the encouragement and information/recommendations.

After a one month shit show with a previous dealer and another month being serviced by another, my Explorer II is back!

You took it back to Rolex it seems, probably for the best!

Did Rolex charge for the work, considering it may be a known fault?

They were actually able to do it in-house without having to send away. While they were in there I opted for a service. They cut me a pretty good deal.

You made the right call.
Glad everything is good to go, I love the 5-digit Polars.
