1 Daytona vs 2 or more other Rolex models?

After a lot of dithering and agonizing, I put together the funds to just go ahead and get a Daytona C grey market. I was literally on a trusted seller's website looking at it, when I realized something. For the budget needed for 1 Daytona, I could get a BLNR AND Explorer I and probably have a bit of change left over.

All of a sudden this was very intriguing as with my Sub this would create a very balanced 3-watch collection in an "Air, Land, and Sea" theme. You could say this about all Rolex models (including the Daytona) but I like the rich histories behind both the Explorer and the GMT models as well. Plus the GMT's complication is probably a tad more useful to me than a chrono.

If I get creative and patient on the preowned market, I could probably add a Datejust as well, all for around the budget of a Daytona. So essentially I could end up with 4/5 of my favorite Rolex models. And maybe just start all over after that and save up for the Daytona.

The BLNR by itself is probably my current 2nd favorite Rolex. So I'd say if my desire for a Daytona was 10 out of 10, the BLNR would be around an 8. So it does make the decision pretty tough when in addition to the BLNR I could have 1 or even 2 more Rolex models I also really like for the same money.

IMO get your 10 of 10 first. That itch will always need to be scratched.

I’m torn. I’d rather have the DaytonaC over the BLNR and Exp combo, but I’m not a fan of paying over retail. I guess if I was going to drop $20k, I’d want to make sure I was getting what I most wanted.

Yea pretty difficult decision. BLNR premium is not much when considering retail + sales tax I'd have to pay at any local AD, and Explorer I pretty much sells are retail. So it's 2 watches I like at pretty much no premium, or 1 watch I really like at a hefty premium.

Explorer 1 and BLNR gets my vote.

I sold my BLNR last year and just picked up the forums favorite watch Airking 116900

But I love it. and prefer it to my BLNR no kidding... I do plan to add a DJ41 White or Blue Dial next. 2 watch collection complete.

I'm more of a car and motorcycle guy so my $$ primarily goes to BMW and Harley for toys.. but Rolex is special to me and I plan to always keep at least 1. however 2 is my sweet spot and dont have to give a big explanation to the wifey on owning 2. for now my AK is doing the trick and I'm fully content.. but down a 1 -2 year road I will be picking up number 2.

I almost picked up a Blue Skydweller Blue for 14k at my AD but made a big purchase for my wife instead. It would've been a 1 watch only for a long time for me and I wanted to do something special for my wife.. I love the Daytona ceramic.. however I have discovered in all my time searching that I'd prefer two to one even if it was two of the Rolex lower tier watches like the AK and explorer 1 / OP39 or DJ41. Really digging the OP39 in the new white dial.

I think you would be far happier with 2 than 1... but deep down only you can answer that question... what scratches your itch best ??? The BLNR seems to really be tugging on you and I personally wrestled between the EXP 1 and the AirKing.. ultimately the AK won out as I liked the splash of color and the quirkiness of the watch.. in person / on the wrist its stunning !

I wish you an easy decision as I know it will be a tough one .

I haven't owned a Daytona, but I have seen them and they are striking. That being said, I have owned a date and no-date SubC, 2 JC DSSD's an SD43 and a vintage 16014 and they are all beautiful in their own ways. I recently picked up an Air-King 116900 which I love for its simplicity as well as a BLNR. I was surprised at how much I like the BLNR, it is really cool to wear. I mention all this to highlight that I think you will be happy with whatever decision you make! You will enjoy owning either the Daytona or both the BLNR and Explorer I!

At $20k USD (they're more like $22k USD in Australia) I'm not sure I would be buying a SS Rolex

So for me, I would buy the BLNR and Explorer. However if you already have a sub I would probably look at other brands

However what makes me happy is not necessarily what makes you happy.

I cant really see the price of the Daytona softening and maybe the same could be said about the BLNR. My guess is that the Daytona's value will continue to rise at a faster rate than the BLNR, get the Daytona now and save up for the other 2.

Those 2 over that one. Easy call if I were making that decision.

I can’t understand how somebody pays $20k for that watch. No offense, just don’t get it.

Ask yourself, if the hype dissipates the day after you bought a Daytona, and it’s no longer trendy....would you still be happy with it? If not, you don’t truly like the watch, you like the *idea* of the watch. A lot of people are in this category (IMO) and don’t even realize it.

You could get a BLNR, the Exp 1, brand new from AD in your name AND a 5 digit no date Sub (or something else similar)......just think about that before you make a decision.

As you have a Sub get the D500, those three are pretty similar otherwise.

Sometimes less is more. If you’d be more satisfied with one Daytona than two others, the answer seems pretty straightforward. It’s tough to get past that value proposition, but if you opt for 2 vs 1, maybe you’ll just end up with more watches than you really wear and truly enjoy. Just a different perspective...

Get the Daytona. The itch won't go away until you do and you might end up flipping and losing money on other watches along the way.

I agree with others. Get the one you really want. If you don’t you’ll just keep wanting it and it will take away from the other watches you want to get. I’ve bought 13+ watches to fill the void thinking well this is what I can afford right now of the watches I’m interested in. I would’ve saved myself plenty of money and time if I had just bought the watch I wanted in the first place.

Daytona is my vote.

All great watches, but I would say get what you really want. With that being said, the DaytonaC is a great buy at MSRP. Had I had not got mine at list, I would definitely be going for something else at $20k instead of a SS DaytonaC.

This. Less is more. The Sub and Daytona make an excellent 1-2 punch. My honest opinion, get the Daytona now and put your name on the lists of your local ADs for the new GMT PepC. The wait will be long, but at least it will give your watch fund time to recover

I actually feel like the Air-King is gaining momentum on here. It's next up on my wish list. Huge bonus that they are readily available.

I sometimes think watches that are hard to come by and/or are more expensive aren't necessarily better. I'd go two over one all day long.

Also, I'm just not a fan of paying way above MSRP.

You should get the watch you really want. If you go for 1 watch and it is the watch you really want and makes you happy then go for that one, if it is not the case then go for the option which will give you more variation. Good luck

The new SS Daytona is too much for too little. It will go down in value once the fake shortage BS is gone and the hype dissipates. Also, it is crap actually telling the time..not legible compared to a Sub, Explorer, GMT etc. Air, Land and Sea feels like a good combo...
