Counted explorer 1 in Explorer, and SD43 in SD collection, but yes these two also can be counted as only models...

Daytona in 2018. is offered in 48 different variations...

Pure assumption but then again I know the lofty figures quoted by the OP are, well just an exaggeration. As a comparison, Raynald Aeschlimann, the President of Omega had quoted in Baselworld 2018 that the projected sales forecast for the new SS Seamaster MC 300M alone once the model is released into the international market in Aug 2018 is 100000 units in 12 months

Wouldn’t it be as useless as the number of Apple Watches sold?

Not a rant there are now almost as many models of Apple Watch at Rolex. It won’t change anything IMHO.

Not that I have any idea what the real number is but I can tell you for sure that not every AD in the US has or has had an RG Daytona. There are several different tiers of Rolex dealers. Remember there are a lot of smaller AD's that are not in the major population centers that simply never get these pieces unless a customer orders one. I know for a fact that a couple AD's I know never had a white gold Pepsi as stock in the 4 years it was produced. I was told they would be happy to special order it or any other Rolex in the catalog that you don't see in the case.

Agreed they want you to underestimate and there is no way they will ever let the public know their numbers.

I would love to know the numbers. I just think it'd be interesting. I like looking at the numbers for anything though. Number of cars sold for example. I remember reading somewhere that if the Honda Civic were a brand it would be one of largest brands in America. Interesting.

I would bet that with all of the Rolex and watch knowledge on here, we could get pretty close to a good estimate. Take 900,000 watches and rank which ones we think sell the most and assign each a percent of 900,000.

We know the Date-Just (Day-Dates) sells the most. On the sports models it probably goes:

Submariner
GMT Master II
Explorer II
Sea-Dweller/DSSD
Explorer
Daytona (would be higher if they were available)
Yacht-Master
Milgauss
Yacht-Master II
Air-King

I'm in a profession where I see a lot of high end watches, and BY FAR, THE MOST I SEE ,are submariners, and 36 mm DATEJUST on jubilee s. I see probably 20 of each, every day I do this job. It's not to say I don't see a variety of other nice watches

Exactly. There is no benefit to Rolex in releasing production volumes. And I posit that the numbers are WAY higher than most people would guess.

I don't care about production numbers, the competition surely does.
I care more about production period, put stock on the shelves Rolex.

Who ever does the balancing of models for slated production at Rolex isn’t very good at their job (in my opinion). The wait times for sport models are getting a little ridiculous.

The oversupply of dress models vs demand is driving watches into the gray market and this is dragging some steel sport models along. No gray market seller will accept a bunch of datejusts if there isn’t a sport model in demand in the mix. The gray market guy then makes his money on the steel sports model to compensate for the discount t he has to put on the datejusts. The end result is normal AD customers for steel sports models have to wait and wait.
