Voted no, but neither options is a great choice for me. People should be able to discuss whatever they want within the forum rules. I agree some of the topics get old, but I can choose to not read them.

B) I have learned a lot here in 1 1/2 years, and it has fed my knowledge of and interest in watches. But one of the worst aspects of reading TRF is the constant focus on value retention. I wear my expensive watch every day, and I take care of it. But I don't want to think, "Gee, I just nicked the case. Probably cost me $3,000 in value." I never ever thought about my DJ that way in the first 30 years of wearing it.

Overall, I enjoy this place, but there are only so many topics to discuss and some of them get beat to death on a regular basis.
Agreed there should be a sub forum for such topics. There's plenty of people who are starting new threads asking for advice on which watch they should buy for the sole purpose of which will retain or increase in value in x amount of years. Not only would a sub forum help put people looking for this info in the same space but it would also then help to reduce the number of repeat threads discussing the same topic (at least in theory). Just my 2 cents

Yes

Only because most who post these threads have no idea what an investment is.

Why? This forum is privately owned by an attorney, not shareholders or a board of directors. He alone can set the rules and what can be discussed or not discussed. There are already restrictions on certain topics.

I didn’t answer the poll. Honestly, I didn’t read the whole thread of responses either before posting.

I’m a “to each his own”type of person. If someone makes a post I don’t feel like reading about money/investment of a Rolex (or any other subject) I just wont click it. Or maybe I will if I’m bored. Who really cares at the end of the day? It’s no harm to me and if it’s important to someone else who am I to say they can’t make such a post?

Just my $.02

"price, cost, discounting, availability and...future value"

Can we just ban one of them, namely the FUTURE VALUE?

I don't mind seeing discussions about price, cost, discounting, and availability. After all, I have limited resources.

While we're on it can we also ban the use of forum cliches like "just my 2 cents"? It so annoying.

Also ban such terms such as "vacay", "fab", "woot woot", "woo hoo", "anyhoo", "hubby", "wifey".

Who cares what they do with their money.

I don't mind at all. I want them to buy my watch at a premium :) . If they enjoy earning 3K after 25 years, then good for them.

I just say buy buy buy :)

I do find those thread with "what should i buy?" silly. Seriously? People can't think for their own these days? That's sad. What's the point of asking 100 people with 100 different answers? Anyhow, I try to stay away from those thread.

Rolex isn't giving their watches away for free.

It takes "money" in varying forms and currencies to acquire one, so "money" will always be part of the Rolex conversation. Just the way it is...

A suggestion could be to have a sub forum as “Current Reference Availability and Value Speculation”.
I didn’t vote but I just figured that's an easy fix and would tone down the General Discussion sub forum to those of us not interested in the current production watch “investing” conversation.

A sub-forum dedicated to pointless, hamster-wheelish speculation where those who believe others might posses a crystal ball can easily connect with those who pretend they have answers to unanswerable questions re future watch values would probably do the trick rather than outright banning.

Otherwise, as with any forum if it gets loaded up with thread after thread of the same repetitive nonsense asked in slightly different ways, people lose interest in participating.

I've been on a sports team forum where it collapsed due to a few participants, who obviously liked math and saw the movie Moneyball too many times, were zealots about player analytics, starting thread after thread of player analytics, injecting analytics into every discussion thread, and basically sucking up all the bandwidth so to speak on the team's forum. After awhile, it just became too boring and collapsed on itself which is quite a dubious achievement on a Sports team discussion forum.

Checking in later it was the same; a few people talking sports-math who believed they held special, crystal formula-balls as to who to draft, who to trade, who should play where, etc etc. Everyone else had fled, bored to death.

I've lost so much money in this hobby.

Yes, I know I know there are many of you out there that always break even or even come out ahead when you sell a Rolex everytime.

So now that I do have a few Rolex that I have managed to hold on to that are appreciating and I'm out of the flipping game I don't mind these "investment" threads.

I guess if you don't like them skip over them.

The days of banter and jocularity have diminished with the passing of the great JJ and the explosive growth of this forum. Over a 100,000 members or something?

It is not as intimate as it was 11 years ago when I joined. But it is still a great forum.

More than twice that already, Tom. Not all active of course, not by a long way, but every day we get new members and more and more of them lately (mostly non-pledgers) seem to be asking for, or demanding, new sub-forums or new rules.

Already on this thread we have twenty topics suggested as banning topics so you see how quickly we can go down this rabbithole of censorship. TRF is fine as it is, best on the internet by a mile.

If you move all the pointless threads to a sub-forum (like ''My Ad said...'', ''My Rolex gains 4 seconds instead of 2 advertised'', ''Should I trade my Daytona for a Porsche'') as suggested by another member, there will be hardly any new posts in the General Forum :).

The two choices in the poll did not cover how I would prefer it. I don't like the talk all the time of value or speculation on future values. I think one of the great things about this forum is the ability to click on what you want and click out of what you do not. I think we are in a bubble with the watch supply for PP, Rolex and a few others and this two will pass. I say leave it alone and let each member decide what we want to read and discuss.

I suppose it’s inevitable while the market for Rolex is so strong. When it softens we’ll get a reprieve

There was once a thread on TimeZone on what watches we hated. It ran quite a number of pages. And it turned out that as a group we actually pretty much hate all watches.

Now we have a thread here in what we should ban, and so far it look like most of the threads here should be banned. (Investment, is it safe to wear, can it get wet, cute names, etc etc)

I’m with, don’t open threads you don’t like. If it’s a dumb thread it dies soon enough anyways.
