Dog is requiring surgery on both legs

I've gone to two vets and they both recommended surgery. I'm booking an appointment with an orthopaedic doctor soon. My dog has luxating patellas in both legs now and it's very severe. Poor thing can't walk without falling.

Here she is in happier times. Anyone put their dogs through surgery like this?

I’m so sorry to hear this :( we had to put our American Eskimo through a cancer removal but never anything this severe. How do they fix the condition?

Yes, my Maltese back home had it done. Knee surgery. Her knee would constantly pop out of joint. She would scream in pain and I would have to pop it back in. The surgeon just scraped out her socket in there and made it fit better.

She was in a lot of pain and I took time off work to just be with her. We crated her a lot so she could not run around during the process. Lots of love and holding her and she was fine. She runs around like a champ now.

Make sure that the doctor properly medicates his/her pain. They will give them a pain patch but she still was in a lot of pain. I had to get the doctor to give her little opiates in treats. That helped a lot.

If your having a hard time getting the dog to take the pills as we did, I’d look into high dose CBD pills as well, they make them for dogs and are relatively cheap. That’s what I ended up getting for our dog since she would eat the treat and spit the pills

Bless , iv been through a few things with my guys . The worst leg problem was both cruciate ligaments went at once but the vet could only work on one leg at a time. Frustating for the dog and us with the gental recovery procces BUT you will get throught it.

Some of my Danes had knee surgeries.

Dogs seem to recover quicker than people and whine a lot less :)

Wow a great Dane having knee surgery... that must've been a handful.

I don't know about dogs not whining less than people. My dog cries like a child the moment I leave her side. After her spay, she clinged by my side for days.

How did you discover the ligaments were damaged? That's my fear. Its supposedly luxating patellas, but I don't know. I'm still waiting for the orthopedic appointment this week.

Thanks for your support guys! This is my first dog so I'm nervous wreck. She's not even 2-years-old yet!! I hope this surgery will have her up and running again.

I was planning on purchasing my first Rolex, but with this surgery estimate being up to $10,000... I think I'm going to wait. Dog surgeries are so costly!! I wish I had purchased dog insurance.

Good luck with your pup. I have my first dog now and freaked out when my co-worker told me she had spent 50K on vet bills for her dog. I immediately bought dog health insurance. It’s $450/500 a year.

Hope your dog is doing well after surgery. One of my boxers had 3 knee surgeries on the same leg. Very painful for her and her family. It took almost a year for her to heal. It was all good after that... I can say: Happy dog, happy life. All the best for you!

Much the same as our symptoms , can’t straighten leg out and tbh it just disabled her , 7k got both legs and insurance paid for one but she has made a full recovery they did a great job , the money side of things soon disappeared watching her running again

One of my labs has a luxating patella. We opted for the implant surgery where some type of plastic/rubberband thing is implanted to keep it in place. Dog has been fine since.

I'm glad to hear that she made a full recovery. $7000 both legs is a good deal! You're smart to get surgery. Really wish I had done that.

Yeah my wish is to see her running again and no reconstructive surgeries. Just one and done is my wish.

They're going to scrape my dogs trochlear groove to make room for her patella since it doesn't like to stay in place. Sounds scary

You are so lucky you have pet insurance. I wish someone had told me to get dog insurance. The vet bills since I've had her are quite extensive and I've only had her for a year. Now this big surgery... This is my first dog too.

She started using her leg but not very long and pulled it back like before. A second surgery put some plastic in to stabilize her leg... got better first. Good news and bad news: treatable but she needed another surgery to remove the plastic... after all that she did just great. Was running like she never had a problem...

A couple of years ago a friend of mine’s dog needed some surgery. My friend is a professional cheapskate, and quite brilliant at it. After getting the quote (Washington DC area), for the surgery he took the dog to Richmond, VA to have the surgery, and it was way cheaper. So geographic location matters with veterinary care. I never would have thought of that!
