Icon4 GMTIIc Replica -- spot the differences

This should be a good thread for spotting the newer fakes out in the market and helping TRFers spot them sooner before purchases.

The following is a video for a GMTIIc replica that I saw someone post on another forum.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA0F-QvMfRg

Being a GMTIIc owner, I was very intrigued by how similar the replica was and at the same time I was scared. I got a knot in my stomach thinking about "How can you spot a fake nowadays when they are almost exact replicas?" So, I spent a good amount of time watching and replaying the video (in high quality mode) trying to spot the differences.

Here's what I found:
  1. Unscrewing of the crown moved the 24hr hand even though the crown wasn't in any of the setting positions yet (00:16-00:20)
  2. Rolex crown in the rehaut engraving is not perfectly centered above the 12 o'clock marker (01:12)
  3. Clicking sounds from rotating the bezel sounds funny -- too loud (01:00-01:07)

The scary thing is that the flaws I've found are only more noticeable when you get to directly interact with the watch or through close examination in a video. This watch's flaws are almost unnoticeable with only photos.

Can anyone else spot anything?

It would not surprise me if some even more convincing counterfeit Rolexes exist.

Given the present cost for a Rolex, and the potential profit margin, I don't see why a large-scale counterfeiter couldn't/wouldn't spend $300-$500 making a convincing counterfeit.

I will not buy either a Rolex or an Omega from anyone other than an AD, and I don't even trust the AD's.

Wow, if thats a replica it looks pretty good , maybe they are showing a genuine Rolex as advertising to sell the replica's . The watch you purchase won't be that one .

That looks very good for a replica....i bought my GMT Master IIc second hand but before I settled the sale I took it to the RSC and paid AUD99 to get them to check the watch out including the movement. It was all sweet, for a piece of mind it was the best $99 i spent.

Everything looked legit until I heard that clicking noise when he was turning the bezel. In all seriousness, that replica is really scary! I mean unless you actually really investigated it, in public, this watch would seem like the genuine article. Ironically it kinda makes you think, why you would pay thousands of dollars for a watch, that has a perfect replica such as this one....... But, you can fool everyone else, but you can not fool yourself. And I couldn't live with wearing a timepiece I knew in my mind was fake.

I have a GMT IIc, and I see the difference easily.
  • The fake has a quickset date, real ones do not.
  • The fake can't move the hour hand independently, real ones can.
  • The crystal is too high over the bezel.
  • There is a gap between the top of the rehaut and the crystal.
  • The clasp sounded terrible.
  • The crown didn't sound right when he pulled it out.
  • The snap of the date sounded terrible.
  • The bezel didn't sound right, and the movement didn't look right either.
  • The dial font is wrong
  • The crown on the dial isn't exactly right.
  • I noticed it had the laser etched crown, but I bet it does not look exactly right under a loup.
  • The focus on the back of the bracelet was terrible, but the writing looked way too faint.
  • The sweep of the second hand doesn't look right. (could be video quality)

Pretty impressive fake overall; if one wasn't intimately familiar with the model it would pass more than casual scrutiny. Even to someone very familiar with the brand it would look very convincing on someone's wrist.

All of the sound problems could be bad audio quality. I wouldn't mind checking out one of those fakes in person to find out.

Fake are nearly as good as the real thing now, my mate got one in USA for $500 and it is almost impossible to know the difference the weight, feel and finish are like the real thing this is not good as only makes it easier for people to get ripped off

Here's what I've found, most posted before:
  1. Date clicking sound. Sounded different from the 3186. Sounded cheap.
  2. Bezel clicking sound. Sounded metallic versus Rolexes new rotating system.
  3. Date change over sound. Again, sounded different, cheap.
  4. Clasp seemed to difficult to open, like them fakeys that you need a pair of pliers to open. Also sounded different when it was snapped shut.
  5. Reflection off of Ceramic Bezel. Was closer to a glass like reflection (lower hardness, thus lower reflection). Didnt mirror surroundings like ceramic does.
  6. Stickers all wrong.
  7. Couldn't see a close up of bezel numerals, but I got a feeling they do not look like platinum with a sandblasted like finish. Just a hunch.
  8. Laser engraved crown on crystal. Reviewed tape and saw crown that Moto referred to. The genuine crown is not visible to the naked eye.
  9. The crown tube looks too thin, but difficult to see in video.
  10. Second hand movement. Looks like it has five mini jumps inbetween second markers instead of seven. This is a pure guess on my part. Doesn't appear to "sweep" as smoothly.

The obvious thing is that 24 hr hand is under all of the hands where on original it is between hour and minute hands. Of course if you don't have the real one it's hard to tell but the second I looked at this video I could tell something is wrong with the hands, and then noticed that 24 hr hand is not in right position. It is very obvious
