Red Tide SW Florida

Anyone living near there care to describe what’s going on? We’ve been looking at houses in that general area; however, the news isn’t that great right now.

(Yes, there are other people sites for thus), I want a TRF perspective from people living with it.

It's awful. But it's no reason to not buy a house over. It just happens every so often.

Chris - it comes and goes over the years. Just something else that people in FL deal with - like hurricanes and high flood insurance premiums!

It also affects some people more than others. When red tide is bad it's not much fun to be at the beach but it usually doesn't last as long as it has this year.

if you want perfection you buy in Kauai. otherwise you deal with heat, hurricanes and red tide.

I live on the shore in Naples. When red tide is present I feel it in my lungs. I’m told it doesn’t pose a health concern but I do get a semi persistent cough when it’s there.
As said above, it comes and goes and some years are worse than others. It’s not a big deal and certainly wouldn’t deter me from buying a place on the beach. If you’re away from the shore I don’t think you would even notice it.

I agree with opinions posted --- red tide's around off/on but winds and currents can affect where it is and if it lingers. Some folks have issues with it, and if you have serious allergies, asthma, or other breathing issues, it's smart to be aware of conditions/severity and leave the beach right away if anything starts to bothers you. But it doesn't always seem to bother everyone.

I was at the beach in Naples late Saturday and everything was fine. I also spent several days early this summer on Sanibel without issue. And, for what it's worth, I have allergies and mild asthma but several years ago did a run/bike/run event on the beach in Siesta Key without incident when the triathlon's swim leg was eliminated because of red tide.

The pictures of dead wildlife I'm seeing posted by friends is awful. It's hard to tell what's real/current and what's exaggerated.

I have seen it first hand, I haven't seen your pics but they are probably accurate. I was once on top of a tall condo on Longboat Key with binoculars and it was shocking all the dead fish I could see out there.

Though I appreciate your response, I am sorry to read it.
