Sydney

Was in Sydney for a few days. Went into some Rolex ADs. Same story everyone has been reporting everywhere. Only PM watches. And only DateJusts and Day Dates. No PM submariners or GMTs or Daytonas. And LOTS of empty spaces. Both stores looked like they were going out of business. Many workers standing around in suits looking extremely serious. I kind of wanted to ask both stores what they may be holding in back, but I felt like I would look like I was groveling and absolutely did NOT want to look needy nor beg. So I just walked out.

Australia is rubbish for watches without an AD relationship. Not just rolex but AP too

I think it’s really hot and cold at the moment. I was told no more names on the waiting list for date/sub or GMT at most ADs. After walking in Kennedy’s in Martin place they took my name and I picked up a GMT 2 months later.

IMH ADs are just doing anything they can to service their regulars and it’s a lot about luck.

I’m in sydney for work. Hoped into what seemed like reputable grey dealer (store was in a great location smack in the middle of the CBd). I saw a BLRO in the window and They wanted $31.5k AUD for it!!!!

I will give him some credit as he did say the price was negotiable...

I did see the CHNR however he told me they recently sold a BLNR.

I was in a heritage market type place close to Westfield mall.

Just buy from one of the trusted sellers on here. No worries and it will get to your door in 2-3 days.

Otherwise for the prices the Sydney grays are asking just fly over to the US and give yourself a 1 week holiday and pick it up. It will probably be cheaper than paying local prices or come out even but you just gave yourself a mini holiday + new watch for the same price.

All the grays in Australia get their watches from overseas anyway.

Not many sellers on here will ship internationally, many times i've seen something i like but it's conus only. Also the 10% GST and the hassle of paperwork too.

I’m not in the industry so I’m just guessing but they make their money on selling the PM models. The cabinets are mostly empty but what’s left are the gold subs, Daydates and DJ.

Plus any SS sports come in and go out the same day.

I hear ya... I'm on "Expression of Interest" list for Sub Date last week and decided to call all the AD's in Melbourne and got the cold shoulders of "No, we haven't even seen it and no waiting list!" and just for laughs I asked about BLNR and got laughed at haha...

What a joke of stock they have in Australia..... thus making me look at other brands, but so much want on Sub date!

Lost interest

What a joke. I have purchased six stainless steel sports watches from my AD who I ave been loyal to and purchased non Rolex models including a couple of Patel’s. Been on the waiting list for a ceramic Daytona since day one. Still waiting. Never get tempted with anything when I go in, which I rarely do cause of no stock. Losing interest and a bit over Rolex. Not sure why Australia is missing out, but if that is their strategy not much we can do about it. My two cents......

Why do you think it is limited to Oz only, really? I can tell you it's exact same story all over the world - everywhere from London to Singapore to Tokyo to Hong Kong (which I have visited over the past 12 months - all major major world markets for watches) you'd get the exact same reaction whenever asking for a Sub or GMT. At some point I just gave up - its self depressiciating to get laughed at every time I want to spend $10K on an absolutely unnecessary discretionary-spend only object. I learned not to ever utter "Steel Daytona" when talking to ADs, thats like getting a certification of a chief village idiot right there and then, just for asking. What a world we are living in. #sad

Supply issues and AD's prioritizing for top clients (or PM purchases) and perhaps profiting from selling to re-seller's

Some may say the deliberate supply shortage by Rolex is promoting corruption in the retail market. Authorised dealers are giving preference to those who can pay them the most (whether above or below the counter) and hence the massive mark-ups continue.

Surely Rolex does not wish promote global corruption of their retail market....but alas they seem to be prepared to facilitate such activity.

It seems as if Rolex is scoffing at the consumers who have a genuine interest in purchasing a Rolex as retailers summarily dismiss enquiries from genuine customers to purchase stainless steel professional models.

At some point this has to hurt the Rolex brand when consumer disillusionment turns to disrespect.

I think you have brought up an very important point. Its going to start hurting Rolex sooner rather than later if they keep this up. Might not hurt their financial pocket but it will indeed hurt their reputation and the way people view them as a company. Playing a very dangerous game I would say.

I think every Rolex advert should now say "Only available at unauthorised resellers" and not the AD cause they never have stock for the general public!

I agree with Steve here.
It is now SO hard to get a SS Rolex.
Maybe a better strategy for Rolex , instead of making them unavailable, would be to just raise the price hugely. That way at least they'd be selling some watches to people who really want them. At the moment they are only making grey dealers happy!
