Car Guy’s Dream

Went to visit my folks tonight.

Hour and a half trip turned into 3 because of the big storms in my area. No sweat. The RRS handles the inclement weather like a beast. But it should. That’s part of its job.

But by the time we get to my area, it’s a disaster. Flooding everywhere. We needed to go on very roundabout routes because so many roads were closed.

We passed half a dozen empty cars in the middle of a huge pool of water. I have great video, but can’t figure out how to attach.

Anyway, at one point we pulled up to guy with his car blocking the road. He was not an officer. I ask him what the deal is. He says, roads closed, a few cars stuck.

I’m thinking, this is why I bought a car like this. If it can’t handle it, what’s the point? I raise it up via a knob and switch it to mud flaps in the special programming.

I went through quite a few deep areas to get home. I had loads of fun.

Even took a stranded family home at one point. What a great day.

Nice Seth. That’s what these rigs are meant for. It’s nice to know that if you’re ever in a hairy situation, your rig will get you out.

Good thing you weren’t driving your Benz. That thing would have been toast!

Glad it went well, just don't get too cocky.
Fast moving water can be quite the formidable foe.

Wow, that's a good amount of water. Did you ever get panicky or did you have full confidence in the rrs the whole time?

I was relatively nervous the whole time.

The first pool scared me a bit. Before I knew it, I was way deeper than I thought. I kept a steady light pressure on the gas to keep the exhaust blowing out.

But I was also relatively confident. I just kept thinking that this is what the car is made for.

I did turn around a time or two instead of going through. So while relatively confident, I was mostly prudent too.

Glad you made it through - I’m sure you were careful. We’ve had some towns whose Main Street flooded for days on end.

The reasons for blocking some streets/roads and using detours (even without fast moving water) is to reduce the wake that can breach sandbagged entrances to homes and businesses.

In one town here, Main Street was also a State Highway - the tractor trailers were causing damage unintentionally by their wake. So everyone had to detour just the same as the big rigs to mitigate damage.

If you upload your video to YouTube then you can link it here. Like this guy’s:

My sister and her family were at Seton Hall yesterday. I talked to her on their way home. She told me they had to divert their way home a few times because of flooded roads.

We were on Long Beach Island last month. It rained like the end of the world one day and the roads flooded quick. Water was halfway up to the rims on my F150. Locals said the bay gets high quick. Once the rain stopped, the roads were dry within four hours.

Interestingly enough, I got the warnings as I was in the middle of it.

But it was rainy, so the weekend car stays put.

Thank his I didn’t get caught out in that. I would have had a heart attack.

I’m regards to the family, imho, it’s how we as people should act. One of my neighbors asked them to move away from their driveway. Smh.

So much fun.

My wife was a bit panicky but she ended up being a willing participant.

Can’t ask for a better beast than a 4Runner to enjoy the rough weather.

Good point.

I got her washed up today and gave her a good one over. So far, so good.

I’ll check again though for sure.

When I was working I only dealt with localized flooding, but had a number of stalled cars .
Here’s my advice for next time in widespread flooding, turn around . You can’t see what obstacles are under the surface that can damage your car, you can’t see if all or part of the road is washed away , you don’t know when the next creek, river or culvert is about to dump a significant amount of additional water into the road . Hence the term flash flood....

Although from your pics that doesn’t seem to be very deep at that time , but things change very fast .

As for ignoring the “ not an Officer “ , well sure in these incidents they get tied up quickly, and you may have a volunteer FF in street clothes , Joe from the highway Dept, who, knows helping out .
