Buy or be patient

I love the olive green dial of the OP 34 mm. I really love the submariner as well. Is it worth the extra 3500 for the sub?

Yes. You’re talking two completely different references. Which one ‘sings’ to you the loudest?

Sub is worth the extra IMO. If you're unhappy with the Sub, you could easily sell, buy the OP and pocket the difference.

I'd get the sub first then OP down the line.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion but someone has to stand up for the humble, beautiful OP 34. I own this watch so I'm a bit biased of course, but had I had a choice between my green OP 34 and a new no date SubC, for the same price, I personally would've chosen the OP 34. I don't like what Rolex did with beefing up the lugs on the sub. I also think the hour markers are comically large. The price inflation on subs in just the past twenty years has changed it from a legitimate diving watch to a complete status symbol. It is the most obvious and ubiquitous and the sports watch that people who have no knowledge of the brand or of watchmaking will almost always opt for.

The OP 34 is, in my opinion, one of the more sophisticated choices for modern Rolex. The price is more in line with historical pricing for just a great, all around, everyday watch that is truly perfect in any situation. I think it looks better with formal attire, easily slips under a cuff, yet the smooth bezel and oyster bracelet also wears extremely casual. It flies under the radar and doesn't scream "I'm wearing an expensive watch!" It has more water resistance than you will ever need in your life and you won't walk down the street and see 100 people wearing the same watch. Being so much smaller, it's reminiscent of the classic vintage 36mm aesthetic and it's also a lot more comfortable. The green dial, which changes color in different lighting, brings me joy every day and I haven't grown tired of it. It feels like a watch for people "who just know."

That being said, if you're heart is in the sub, and you're only considering the OP 34 because it's cheaper, wait and save up. You'll never be happy with a watch you're settling for. But if you love the OP 34 on its merits - because of its traits and not in spite of them, then I think it's a great choice. Good luck!

If I wanted to upgrade to the sub would the OP be a difficult sale?

As Eliot said, it depends. However, I tend to go the other way when faced with a decision...in other words, it would be much easier to dump the sub for an OP if you didn't like it.

I also love the green OP, but I’m going SubC date then add the OP after.

Yes! Because if you buy the OP you will still want the Sub. Most likely if you buy the Sub the OP will be a watch that you like but may not need to own.

It will depreciate as the demand is not nearly as strong as with the Sub plus dealers will deal on the OP with valued clients which depresses the resale market for everyone.

I think if you’re asking the question, deep down you want the Sub.

They are very different watches. One is 34mm, the other 40. The case design is different too. 34mm OP has more of the classic Rolex look, 40mm sub has larger redesigned lugs. OP has no date, sub has the feature (unless you are looking at the no date sub).. I can't advice one or the other, go with the one that sings to you more. I personally would choose the Sub. Also easier to sell if you decide it is not for you.

Sub is by far more popular, harder to get and retains value more. If they both appeal equally to you then I would vote sub! But at the end Buy what speaks to you more!

The two watches look very different. IMO 34mm anything is a difficult sale these days compared to the more common 39-42mm sizes. I would only buy 34mm if it truly sings to me and the fit and look is absolutely perfect, plus the watch is not available in a larger size that looks and fits comparably. The OP has larger sizes worth exploring.

Sub is too expensive..
Get the 34mm if you like it..its a watch for life..
I own the OG 34mm and it looks so good and so durable..I'm having trouble even looking at another watch..
Been on my wrist for 2.5 years now..every day wearer..
Perfect..!
