Anyone listen to Howard Stern?

He interviewed the great Sir Paul McCartney this morning so I was treated to an in depth and uninterrupted interview about his songs, his life, his relationships and, of course, the Beatles for a full hour. It had already started when I got in the car and it was still playing when I arrived at work (west coast feed).

It just sounded like two friends chatting over a cup of tea but Howard was asking about his songs, his song writing style, how he came up with the ideas, how he developed them, his relationship with John Lennon, his other bands and music after the Beatles. As someone who loves music it was really fascinating and entertaining.

I've listened to Howard Stern on and off since the early 1990s when his show became syndicated and first aired in Los Angeles. Picked him up again about 13 years ago when I first subscribed to Sirius which is now SiriusXM. He has very few commercials and the show is unfiltered so guests and host can say basically anything they want.

Howard Stern has become a really polished interviewer. He prepares for his guests and is really interested in their stories. He can make even the most uninteresting people interesting and someone like Paul McCartney is just a home run.

Missed that, but did you see the carpool karaoke episode with Paul McCartney? Well worth checking out...

When I can, I catch Stern.

I’ll say I agree that he’s a great interviewer and the only reason I have an occasional Sirius subscription.

I used to years ago. Like many things in life, you eventually lose interest and move on too other things. Can't understand why he is still working? Has more money than any one person could possibly need.

No, but I'll check it out. I enjoy those segments.

By the way, Howard had James Corden in a few months ago and James hinted that he had an upcoming guest but he couldn't say who it was, just that it was a big get and that he was really looking forward to it. Howard immediately guessed Paul McCartney. He was right but of course James Corden wouldn't admit it at the time.

I've lost interest too at times but found that since he moved to Satellite radio he has mellowed. I also think therapy has helped him come to terms with some of the neurotic behavior of his past and his narcissism. As a result his radio show has just gotten better. He is a supreme talent and I think he just likes having the show so he has a place to say what's on his mind. He only works 3 days a week now. They replay the shows constantly on the two channels he has.

Mc Cartney is just amazing for his age. He is like the energizer bunny. He keeps on going and going.

I subscribed to SiriusXM but not to Howard Sterns - kinda more expensive.
But when on biz trips rental car, I listen to him. At first I didn't like him that much but I've learned to love him overtime.

I listen everyday. Great interview (as always) today. Those who have a negative opinion should really give him a listen and then decide.

I have to agree with everything you've said Julian. Like you I started to listen before his move to Sirius. I had no idea how good an interviewer he was until I listen for a while. I find most people who are negative about him have formed their opinion based on unfounded or narrow view points with respect to one or two segments and not as a whole arc of shows.

I love Stern. Have for a long time.

But I go in and out. Sometimes I get fed up with his incessant bitching. Mostly because I can relate to most of it, and it just fuels my fires.

I used to listen to him years ago. He was really hit and miss. Some days would be great, but far too many times he was always trying to get to the base and sexual escapades of many of his guests. That got old fast.

I will take the word of fellow posters here that he has gotten better over the years. I should check him out again.

A strong +1 for that sentiment. He is also grossly overpaid.

He saved Sirius from certain doom and added millions upon millions of new subscribers. Overpaid? I don’t think so..

I agree with you Julian, I think he’s a great interviewer and often dismissed because of his earlier radio days.

I wish I had caught the interview with Paul ... does he have a pod cast?

His long interviews are very good but its surrounded with a lot "prostate karaoke" kind of material as well. Heard a bill Murray interview one time that was great and unlike any other interview with BM (but in a good way).

I have not listened to Stern in a long time. He is a gifted interviewer. But when I listened to him many years ago, I did not enjoy his seventh grade outlook on male/female interaction. Maybe he’s updated his outlook since my last experience.

Big Stern fan here. Have not heard that interview. Hope they'll replay it.
His interviews on Sirius are great. No time restraints and un-censored. He actually does a lot of research for his interviews and they always come off like 2 guys just chatting.
To the haters - watch the Letterman interview with him on Netflix' My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Might change your view of him (might not). He's not really the same guy he was 20 years ago.

Disagree

He is much worse than that.

I did, and it was interesting as he came off as a real person and not someone who would do whatever it takes no matter how low you have to go to gain attention and notoriety. Yippee, he's now made a name for himself and he can now be civil. Whoopee.

Well, he is 64 yrs old now. Most of us are a bit different now than 20 years ago. Some wiser, some not.
