Military discount on GMT?
Just left visiting my AD. While I was there, a gentleman was getting ready to purchase the hard to find SS GMT LN. Not realizing he was pushing his luck, he demanded getting a "military discount” of 10% off. AD apologized but said sorry.
The client left disappointed. Anyone want it? |

I'm sure lots. What's a military discount? For serving?

I’m semi retired now, but for the last 17+ years I was in retail sales & every Tom Dick & Mary wanted a discount: military, AARP, you name it, we’re al looking for a bargain!

It's pretty prevalent in the USA to see service men beg for a discount just because they're enlisted. Works if you're at the local diner and they comp your coffee, absurd when it comes to these types of purchases.

I see, I've known of doctors getting free drinks and the like but I'd hope it wouldn't extend to luxury purchases.

I proudly serve and got $500 off of my Sub when I bought it just for asking.

We don’t have to beg. It’s just a simple question and if they offer it, great and if they don’t I will more than likely purchase whatever it is that I’m buying anyway.

I always try to pick up a check for military, law enforcement, and first responders when I can, something I feel I should do just to say thanks! It’s just respect, but that’s just me...

thats nice of you and i would do the same, when its forced i start to have an issue. I had a flight attendant once ask me if "i wanted to move to a seat in the back" because everyone was giving up first class seats on the plane to uniformed military. She said "its something WE do to say thanks" well great, what is the airline doing to pay for it then? It would be my way of saying thanks and at my expense but you guys get to look good for it. I also get to look like the bad guy if i dont move. Its a lose- lose situation when that stuff happens.

Not like domestic first class is anything more than a slightly wider seat anyway though. Now thats got me thinking, is it actually allowed?

Same here, in fact I was surprised and felt uncomfortable when some one offered to pay for a beer. Sorry but this whole begging thing and the military just pushes my button. It certainly was never in my DNA to do such a thing but then again I also remember when the military never got paid that well either. Even so the level of pay isn’t everything. So now that it’s better doesn’t mean it still compensates for the level of risk that they take. I guess as with anything it might occur in some instances as goes anything. One bad apple might give the wrong impression. But please remember that’s just a bad apple. For the majority these young women and men serve for various reasons but it’s not for the purposes to get over or to beg for more than they deserve and often they deserve nothing but respect for what they have done and are doing.

By the way inquiring about a common practice by retailers and begging are two distinctly different things.

Beg? I’ve never begged. I ask, and if told no I move on. Doesn’t hurt to ask. I feel like you’re either bitter towards military or bitter that you can’t get a military discount. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Turns out our veterinarian offers a rather generous 15%, which I didn't know about until my latest visit this year when they asked me when I paid using my USAA credit card. Two dogs and a few cats over the years, that 15% adds up! |

I've also seen (and heard of) ex-military demanding discounts in an entitled manner, though I don't believe it's the norm by any means. |

I served 21 years. Both active and reserve. I served in peacetime, in wartime, in standard deployments and in combat deployments. I’m not a big advocate for discounts based on my career choice. I chose to serve because it is in my DNA. I now own a small business and understand the retail numbers. Most retail prices have some “wiggle room” and “everyone wants to get a good deal”. For me, someone who thinks they “deserve” a 10% discount based on their career choice insults me.

Funny how simple things like this are pretty much nonexistent in European countries.

Like all good gestures, it gets taken advantage of and abused. Anyone like to guess what this list represents ? Logging workers Fishermen and related jobs Aircraft pilots and flight engineers Roofers Refuse (trash/garbage) and recyclables collectors. Farmers, ranchers, and other agriculture jobs. Iron and steel workers. Truck drivers and other commercial drivers. Electrical power line workers. First-line supervisors of construction trades and extraction workers
