Dear TRF members,

I was looking at my spare dial collection during the weekend only to realise, under LED light, some of my dials show 'hairline scratches'.. I never noticed this before-my heart dropped.

So like I should I frantically searched google for 'dial scratch removal' and other similar keywords-only to discover how to perform total dial restorations, not micro hairline scratch removal.

Then I called my local watchmaker. He told me he would have to apply 'some chemicals' and rub on the dial, repeat that a couple times until the hairline scratches disappear. He told me that there's a high chance that they may never go away and the labor could very well turn out to be a futile effort.
So I inquired what exactly is this 'chemical' he would use but he wouldn't tell me.

Thus the mystery remains..

Does any of you gentlemen know how to remove these annoying hairline scratches?-not deep ones, just ones that are only observable under a strong LED light.

If they are only noticeable like you state under strong LED light cannot see any point of trying to remove them you could do more harm than good.

Post some pictures. They might be imperfections on the sunburst that I started a thread on that somehow got locked? Dunno why?

If it’s bothering you, why not send to RSC and get a new dial?

Not possible.
Also, how are you storing your spare dials and how do you handle them?

I think they charge too much. I’d rather stick to a good local watchsmith! :)

I would leave well alone with dials none touched is the best

Do this. I know exactly what you’re referring to. I have seen it before on some of the Rolexes I have had in the past. Strong LED lights or direct, head-on sunlight shows it.

Send it to RSC, request a new dial.

There’s a thread somewhere on imperfection in Rolex sunburst dials.

I store my dials in 'membrane cases'. They are these clear, plastic cases with two cling wrap like membranes that suspend dials right in the middle of the case.

I would love to attach pics but my smartphone camera just can't capture these minute hairline scratches! :(

I obtained all my dials through dealers or m2m sales. I don't think RSC takes in spare dials that were purchased through such sources. Do they? :S

I believe RSC will replace the dials to factory spec but they wont give the old dials back.
