One once, and not a scratch on it (I dropped it on a cement floor. These Iphones are very durable. I watched a few You Tube videos on Iphone durability tests, and you should see some of the things this phone will in fact survive.

Yes, and that's what I said too lol. These phones are plenty durable, in one of the tests on youtube, the guy actually dumped the iphone in water (fully submerged) and it worked fine afterwards. Now, true the common iphone user will not be going around dunking thier phones into water for the crap of it, it's good to know that these phones can handle some abuse. Also, during that test, after I beleive the third drop (from about 3-4 feet) to concrete the Iphone actually cracked. Prior to that though (and it was put through MANY varieties of tests) it held up very well.
Actually, instead of explaining the Iphone duribility tests, here's a link to what they subject the poor phone to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXlriABfOo Enjoy ! Mike |

Yep. I dropped my 3G iphone on my parents wood laminate floor Christmas day. Of course it was in my Otterbox case. I checked it when the family got home. No scratch, nothing. The innards worked fine. My wife dropped her phone at Costco!
I have a gen 1 aluminum iphone I use as an ipod, for email, internet. My kids use it everyday to play games. That thing is dropped at least once everyday: concrete, tile, wood, asphalt, dirt. It's always clattering across some sort of hard surface. I wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to get my kids' lunch/snacks (pizza, candy, cake, juice, wasabi peanut....) off. I tell ya, that thing still runs like a champ after so much abuse! |

I dropped mine the first day I had it - it was a gen 1 hand-me-down from the wife after she got her new one. Man I felt terrible about dropping it but I had one of those acrylic cases in it and it was a little slick in the heat of late Spring. After the drop the case halves went 2 different directions but I'm sure they help diffuse some energy from the impact. So far - it's been nothing reliable with no ill effects at all. Good luck!

I have dropped mine 3-4 times on tiled floor, concrete factory floor and on pavers. I have it in a plastic skeleton cover with clip - they are slippery suckers.

I dropped my Kindle over the weekend. The case did a very good job of protecting it. No real damage, just a few small dotted marks from where the corner poked out of the case and contacted the floor of the parking garage.
I remember when phones were tough... I used to skip my old Nextel handset off of concrete like a stone on a pond. Never broke it (much to my chagrin). |

There is not much to break inside of them other than the mechanism that controls screen movement, leveling etc. The HDD is solid state and won't break. This is the main reason why you pay $300+ for a 16GB touch. I have a solid case protector on mine and don't give it a thought.

Want semi-extreme protection? Otterbox Defender. 2 styles: 1st gen and 3G. I wore mine at an archery tournament (asst. coach) during a downpour and the phone never got wet. Why? the Otterbox completetey encloses the phone with several layers of protection. Rigid plastic case with plastic membrane for the screen, rubber outside covering, water resistant cloth over ports/speakers.
I tried silicone cases and hard slider cases but after a while lint, human skin particles, dust gets underneath the case. Nothing gets in the Otterbox. |

I had a 2G and dropped it a few times and it never hurt it. My 3G slid out of my jacket and through a crack in a chair to a concrete floor(about a foot) and it cracked the very corner of the screen. No biggie as it doesn't affect it's use at all. Payback for the 2G I guess.
Now--I still haven't heard back from Steve Jobs about my Christmas email wanting picture messaging.

I wouldn't hold your breath from hearing back from Steve Jobs :). Apparently, he's not even going to be speaking during the 2009 MacWorld ethier. That was a major bummer, because he is one of the BEST keynote speakers out there IMO. I still can't wait to see what Apple has in store for us in the upcoming year.

Mine got the black strip of death. I loved the thing. Could ride the motorcycle, listen to tunes and answer it on my GPS. When it broke Cingular wanted me to take it to the nearest store, Memphis, and drop it off. No loaners no help. I use it to listen to music now and love it for the Itunes. Too bad customer service is not as good as the product deserves.
