Why so many people against engraving? Engraving means writing words in a family's history. That's a very nice gesture for a man who sees that belonging beyond his own life. It's not about reselling, it's about adding value for the generations in memory and feelings, not in $$$.

Why caring about the 20+% loss of resell value in case of emergency. Who can predict what the resell value will be in 30 or 50years from now anyway??

His grand kids will think about that old grandpa's Rolex which even more special as it bears an engraved message for them and their future kids.

If I insisted on engraving something I would do it on something other than a watch. I am the proud owner of 2 silver cigar boxes that belonged to my grandfather. They have significant names and dates beautifully engraved in clear view on top of the lids of the boxes. This makes sense to me. To me, having something engraved on the back of a watch makes less sense, since in my opinion the pros, the engraving do not outweigh the cons, damage to the watch.

I wouldn't engrave it unless it was 100% to remain in your possession and then as an heirloom. However, worst comes to worst, I guess the case back could (not sure) be replaced down the line.

Congratulations. Perhaps engraving means a lot to you but it might be a deal breaker for future buyers if you ever decide to sell it.

If the resale value of an engraved watch is a “life or death” decision for your children, you have much bigger problems to worry about. Just buy it, wear it, and enjoy it for what it is. It’s just a watch.

I hope that Tissot is 40mm or more. If not, that SubDate will be massive on you.

The Tissot is 40 mm. I initially wanted SD43, but after learning from this forum and also it is easier to get one, I chose Sub-date instead.

Surprised at all the negative engraving posts given how cheap it is to replace the case back.

But don’t engrave it with a joke like selling in case of emergency. Engrave it with something meaningful. Your name, family name, kids names, date you got the watch, birth dates, etc.

A nice idea may be to get the extra blank replacement case back right away and keep it with the box.

Again, I don’t get this idea that the watch always has to be ready for a sale. If you’re planning on it being a family heirloom, and why not, it’s not going to be sold anytime soon. Why spend another $300 to have a metal disc sitting in a drawer?

My father and I have a nice little watch collection. I never think about the value of the watches because they’re never going to be sold in my lifetime. What my heirs do is their business. They can buy new casebacks.

update: Finally engraved it after 6+ months owning it, and want to share it to you guys.

It was my first rolex purchase. I had those stupid unnecessary considerations, and I never spend this much money for a watch. It's like when you buy your first house. You have these considerations that became silly after everything was said and done.
Needless to say, I learnt a lot.

First how is it life or death for children? It’s a watch! Hopefully just an odd sense of humor. As far as the engraving, way do you care about future value IF you are giving it to your kids. It’s a sub anyhow it not doubling in value anyhow

As long as you don't touch anything but the caseback, not all that expensive. Worst case scenario, new caseback and it's back to factory. Often a simple polish will fix it.

EDIT: NVM, just saw you got and engraved it. Congratulations.
