How can you trash the OP? Did he sign some sort of non-compete or something? Assuming not, then you are ALWAYS a free agent open to someone coming in and offering you what you are really worth. It’s called free enterprise. Seems pretty evident it’s your old company who will be worse off.
I definitely would call a lawyer. Maybe it was an honest mistake on the prospective company’s part but people get sued and lose all the time for mistakes. |

People talking about company loyalty are delusional.
There is no loyalty in either direction. If I have to RIF and let productive people go, it will get done. If people voluntarily leave for professional growth, it will happen...this goes on all the time. As a manager, if an employee is looking for another job because they've outgrown or looking for a different experience, I always mention I'm happy to help and provide references. Its not great but ultimately, I'm better off getting a head start looking for a replacement than getting blindsided. Everyone is replaceable. Check emotions at the door. OP, hope this situation resolves it self quickly. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk |

Even as a business owner. Maybe a little bit more loyalty in a small business. But medium to larger sized businesses. Zero loyalty.

As an employer, I ask for this; I you feel like you're not getting what you need out of our working relationship, come to me and voice that. Let me know what you need, and I'll let you know what I need to accommodate you . If we can't make it happen, no hard feelings, we can part ways. I get it, I was once an employee too. I've had employees come to me like that, and I've put my own reputation on the line to help them get positions elsewhere in other companies.

Right now I would see myself as essentially unemployed.
You can't stay at your current company because clearly the bad blood is flowing and even if you make it through this storm, there won't be rainbows with pots of gold waiting on the other side. The new company sucks. If they can't get hiring you right in terms of the basics then working for them will be another $hi7show. Don't resign, but 100% look for a third option if at all possible. |

You have done nothing wrong legally or morally and i certainly wouldn't resign.
Its business end of day and people take it far too seriously. Not as though you seduced the owners wife and mother. If your forced to resign, then in the UK at least this would be grounds for constructive dismissal over the reasons you have stated. But totally different in the States i would imagine. Loyalty is a 2 way street. |

Btw - even with employment at will, most companies have specific procedures before an employee can be let go...those procedures are there to limit litigation, negative PR, etc...even smaller companies have a rep to protect. Makes it hard to run a business if prospective employees spot a trend of negative employer feedback in Google searches. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk |

At the very least, the prospective employer acted unprofessionally.

if you aren't happy working for a company then just say and leave on good terms. I am not being obtuse or trolling. I consider that the OP wants to have his cake and eat it. he needs to just go and find another job. |

Context is important. Nobody in the US can trust their employer not to fire them if they announce they intend to leave. A helpful employer is an extreme exception. Most will simply declare you redundant and terminate your employment. |

And that statement is also flawed.

You are a 0.1 percenter. The the other 129 million full time employees in the US don't leave a job until the next one is locked in, unless they're fired. |
