Recently Acquired GMT 1675

Hello everyone

I've been scouring this forum for awhile reading everything I possibly can about watches (vintage Rolex, Tudor and otherwise). You guys are all awesome and so knowledgeable!!

I recently acquired this 1675 from a friend who was selling it. His dad recently passed away and he was liquidating some of his assets. He (friend's dad) purchased it new and was a pilot. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and was able to purchase it for what I felt to be a fair price.

The watch hadn't ticked for years (unknown how long) so service was required. I sent to RSC Dallas and they got it working for me. The crystal and crown have been changed and I got a new 78360 w/580 end links bracelet with it. Otherwise, it's all original.

I think I have the correct info below here, but would the experts please correct me if I'm wrong?

*SN 5.1mil dates it to 1977/1978

*Mark III dial. Is this the dial known as "Radial" or "Mini" dial? Are those the same things? Is this dial more/less common than others?

*Date wheel has open-6s/9s and is silverish hue. Is this more/less common than others?

*Bezel insert is original. Is this considered a "Fat Font" bezel?

Thank you in advance to whoever might reply on this thread. I'm very proud of this watch and feel very lucky to have acquired it.

Beautiful watch, just curious but there does not appear to be any patina to the lume or bezel. Do you think they have been replaced at some point or is it just the picture quality ? Very nice acquisition, enjoy!

Fortunately it seems that the RSC didn't change the dials or hands.
I am guessing the original owner didn't wear this one much...
Enjoy it in good health!!

Thanks!

It could be the picture quality. The lume plots and the hands are mostly an eggshell hue.

I'll get some additional pics up at a later time.

Thank you!

RSC was GREAT about the instructions I gave them. They did tell me that changing the crown and crystal was a necessity but everything else would be fine to leave as original.

I asked them not to polish it and they obliged (against their recommendation).

Yes - you are correct - the watch sat in a drawer for the better part of 10+ years I've recently learned. I asked RSC if they had any records of servicing the watch and they told me no. Seems it was unused and away from the elements for a long while.

Looks like a very nice Mark III. The eggshell patina looks very nice as well - it doesn't appear white on my monitor.

Thanks for your post!

Is this what is considered "fat font" on the bezel insert?

They were all fat fonts during that era.

There was a time during very late 1960s to around 1970/71 where some of the insert numbers were very fat and the upper opening in the 8s was almost closed. These are referred to as super or mega fat fonts. Below is an example of a super fat font insert.

I wonder what people 'back in the day' thought about these radial dials. I guess most would not have cared.

I think they look great now, but maybe some people said 'why did they change from the maxi dial

I've been searching for anywhere that I can source a period-correct box and/owners manual. Anybody have any suggestions? eBay seems to be hit/miss on what is legit and what is accurate as far as being period-correct.

Thank you!

Wow. This really is nice. Well done. For box, etc you could post in the looking for section of the classifieds here.

That's incredible! Were there just so few printed and/or that survived? That's so hard to believe!
