I get the issue. One would rather come to PP naturally, but the truth is, if/when you do, prices could potentially be outrageous. The Aquanaut used to trade for under retail and has completely exploded.
If what goes up, doesn't come down, there may not be another chance to enter into the Patek world. |

Think it's pretty clear you are just going to flip the Nautilus as you have hype-itis, go see a watch doctor immediately and take a cold shower. If you seriously wanted to try a Patek you would go for a Calatrava.

You want it not because you like it, but because others do. But either way you still want it and will not be happy until you get it. So just go for it.

The blue dial 5711 is definitely a grail watch for me, no doubt. However, reality is that I’m never going to have one.
Fortunately, a blue dial 41 mm DJ with fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet is attainable and equally as impressive to me (IMHO). Bluesy too. I really like the Aquanaut. It’s beautiful. Again, I’d love to have one. However, I prefer my 114060 over it. I could go on. Calatrava 5196. Love it. I want one, but I could get a nice JLC dress watch and be just as impressed. I would put your name down on both the Patek and Rolex if possible, and ponder on the idea for little while.

Luxury issue not a dilemma IMHO. Buy what you like!

My feeling is buy what you like. Pateks are cool but even ignoring the price most of their models aren’t for me at all. I might get a Calatrava or 5711 but their other watches really don’t interest me much.

If its 1, it makes no sense to buy something you dont like. It also makes no sense to stick to one brand just because. Actually the only patek the appeals to me is the white gold Aquanaut with blue dial. Maybe next year .... |

I moved onto Patek when I thought the time was right. I had at that point only 5 Rolex's in my collection. I've added more Rolex's and Patek's since then. Buy what you like and fancy, not what the trend dictates.
I sure as heck would love some SS Pateks but theyre impossible to get past even after having spent 250K at a shop. No end in sight for how much I need to spend to justify them giving up a SS for me. |

I don't bother with things I don't fancy. What strange behaviour.

I have literally just got rid of my 5167a in the lure of a oysterlfex Daytona and the 5711 spends more time in the safe than being worn. The last time I did wear it put a nice dint on the bezel. |

i wouldn't buy one to just check it off the list per say, buy if you can afford it and you actually love it
there are plenty of grail worthy brands that are above rolex- lange, vc, moser, ap, invicta, journey etc etc I'm sure you can move up to any of these |

Hmmm, seems you are chasing the hype. Why want more sports when you already have your sports Rolex watches. There is more to Patek then just the Nautilus. (Patek (dress) is a whole different level do. Ofcource not as rugged as Rolex. You have Volvo and Maserati. Which one is best depends on the specific purpose. For me: Formal setting and suit = Patek or Lange. Rolex and others for everything else

Sell those watches you love and put the funds toward the Patek you don't "fancy."

I believe you answered your own question. Why in the world buy a watch you don’t love? Regardless if the watch is $5.00 or $50,000.00? For the sole purpose of having a “serious watch collection” as you call it. There are other brands other then Patek if you want to diversify. I disagree and think Patek make stunning watches but I am not you. And if I was, I’d look elsewhere or stick to Rolex, which you love. |

Don’t like it, don’t buy it. It’s your watch, you wear it.

I would not fret over a 5711 unless you really want one. Otherwise, a lot of worry and wait for nothing. As said they are fragile and easily scratched.

I’ve thought about Patek and really considered the Aquanaut, but it just does not sing to me. Like you, I love the sports Rolex lineup. I did add an AP ROO with the rubber strap because it fits my love for sports watches. There are lots of options. Buy something you love rather than something “you feel like you should have in the collection.” At least that’s how I think about collecting...

Many other brands and options to consider rather than force a choice based on trends and/or what others like and/or consider a “grail”.

Why don't people just ask the question they really want to ask.
"I want to buy a watch that either holds it's value or appreciates. My choices are the hardest models to get from Rolex and the hardest models to get from Patek. Which should I go for?" |
