I'm a big fan of Angel's Envy. Their bourbon is fairly easy to find and it's great straight or in cocktails. The best is the Angel's Envy Rye that is aged in rum barrels. Comes out in the fall and, IMHO, one the best for sipping.

Cheers

I think there are quite a few very good Kentucky whiskeys available under $50-60.
I am making it my life's work to taste as many as possible.
And if you like making a good Manhattan, why pay more than $50?

Angel's Envy, Basel Hayden, 1792, Woodford, even the newer blends of Old Forester, Four Roses, make great cocktails!

I've not heard that bourbon was getting scarce. Is it due to the increased use of corn alcohol for running cars? (that's probably the best thing for bourbon anyway Whiskey should be made from malted barley)

Weller was a great deal. Poor man's Pappy started from the same mash. I like the Special Reserve. But nothing remains undiscovered forever . . .

Hibiki 17 was great ...

And what Bill Murray was drinking / schilling for in the movie. But my understanding is that the 17 and 12 year Hibiki have been discontinued.

Like all Japanese whiskey, it was ridiculously over priced compared to Scotch or American whiskey.

In the states you are lucky to find Hibiki Harmony (non vintage) which is not the same.

The 17 year was hard to find even in Japan except at the Duty Free. Most of it went to China. Suntory finally gave up.

In CA, I don't see much of the good Japanese whiskey available and what it in the stores is poor value. But when you can find it, Japanese whiskey is as good or better than Scotch or American.
