Help - Rolex for a Female Millenial
I need some help. I want to purchase a Rolex for my 27 year old daughter. She is making it tough on me as she only wants yellow gold. She does not want SS and she says the two-tone looks like it is for old people (like her Dad!). I do not want to spend much more than $5k - which is the real challenge! I have found some all yellow gold Datejust and Presidents from the 80's and 90's in my price range but I have yet to see one in person. She currently wears a fashion gold chronograph and something similar would be good. Any ideas are welcome - Rolex and non-Rolex.
Thanks |

Wow, your daughter is making a tough challenge.
the $5k is the stumbling block for a good condition all gold President (day-date). Let's start from scratch .. What size watch are we looking for ?

I do presume you mean solid yellow gold .. Not gold plated.
Rolex watches are solid. the $5k just make that too hard to find as a Rolex. To give you an idea .. A modern Day date President in solid gold is about $35k

Look at some of the older yellow gold “date” models. They can be found under $5,000 in nice condition on a strap

You could get a gold filled Date or Datejust - something like a reference 1550; however, tough to find a bracelet model if that is what you are after.

It looks like she knows what she wants.
If it were my daughter, I reckon she'll be buying all her own watches going forward just like I have had to since I was earning my own money. After consulting with my wife on the matter, she is in complete agreement. We've lived long enough to have seen how this scenario mostly works out and it's probably much the best if one simply doesn't go there as it may not necessarily be all happy happy joy joy in the long term. |

Most important lesson that you could ever teach her is to make her buy the Rolex on her own.

I bought my wife (also 27) a datejust 31, rhodium with Roman numerals. She loves it.

And my two cents....it’d mean a lot more to her if she used her own money to buy the watch.

Thanks for the help. The best size will be either 26 or 31mm. From what I've found I think I can find something in the $5-6k range.

$5k is going to be tough as you mention, but about $8k may get you an older Datejust or Date in gold
I’ve seen some listed on the forums here |

Why not just give her the $5k and let her buy her own watch. Then you will not be blamed when the 30yr old Rolex needs a $1500 service to rebuild it. When it comes to a gift, sometimes it's best not to ask someone what they want, for fear they lack the manners to tell you.

Just be patient and you will find one in very good condition. These watches are timeless but are not really en vogue right now which favors you. Just learn how to spot a fresh unit and be ready to pay a little more when you come across one. The key element is research. And when you see one pull the trigger right away.

I would get her a modern OP 34 or 36.
No gold.......that is not very millennial, if I may say. She ll get to love the watch as it is perfect for any sort of activity that a youngster is likely to get involved in. She ll thank you later. Of course, you can buy in old gold (vintage) OP date, that would fit the budget, head only. But, I would leave the gold Rolex for herself to buy when she can afford one. Also, I would feel much better if my daughter would not a yg Rolex...for her personal safety.

I just bought this yesterday for my wife.
above your budget new ... but Pre-owned should be easy to find. its 31mm. It has a Mother of Pear dial. to add to the femininity. Not a "show off" watch at all and very pretty. A gold watch might make her a target in some areas but this is very "tame" in comparison. Bling is NOT always best.

5k for gold gets you a shabby overpolished Rolex in need of service.
