Just set up some Google Nest gear....

So my fiancé and I have been talking about getting cameras for the house for a long time. Not because we live in a bad area at all, just for the sake of mind to be able to watch things and our golden retriever.

I’ve done a lot of research into different brands arlo, nest, Amazon, etc. I was seconds away from pulling the trigger on arlo cameras due to a Costco sale, but ultimately walked away.

Then last weekend during a Home Depot trip I ventured over to the nest thermostat. I finally decided to pull the trigger on that because we have a basic builder grade thermostat and I KNEW I was throwing money away. I set it up during Sunday football and have been playing with it for the last week; bottom line I absolutely love the ease of use and functionality. I also truly believe it will save me 20-30 bucks a month.

I then started doing more research into the google nest cameras since I loved the thermostat. Initially I was turned away seeing the price was double that of arlo. Then after some research, I learned the quality blew them out of the water, and the support of google software made me feel much more comfortable.

Finally decided to bite the bullet and picked up two indoor IQ cameras for our main great room which has a clear shot at our front door and hallway to the garage, nest doorbell and nest hub for the kitchen.

I really need to give it to Google on these products. I was able to set up essentially a professional surveillance system around my house in 2 hours, and the quality is RIDICULOUS.

For anyone on the fence of cameras...get the nest. Everything links so easily together and can be operated through your phone and through little hubs you put around the house. And all in for about $1,000 you can’t go wrong!

I set up a similar network of cameras in my house two years ago. At the time Nest only had one (or two) cameras on the market (pre Google Nest says) so I went for Canary. Quality of the indoor cameras is great but the outdoor versions don’t pick up very much other than occasionally wind in the trees. The one thing that’s good about Canary is the monthly cost of £7.99 a month for four cameras - I think that’s pretty good.

I’ll wait a year or so before I switch over to Nest, but I hear nothing but good things. I also own and like their thermostats and smoke alarms. Sounds like a good move OP!

I have two outdoor IQ and indoor as well. Works like a charm, easy set up and unlike Arlo it's continuous streaming.
The two way sound is incredible clear.

Picture quality is poor if compared to hard wire cams but better than the competition imho.

I have the Nest thermostat ,3 indoor cameras and 1 outdoor camera, before Google got involved.

Not sure I like the fact that google, a rather sleazy seller of private information, is going to respect privacy, and now they can monitor 3 rooms in my house.

I have no recording feature enabled.

I'm with you on this. I just don't trust these types of products from Google and Amazon, so we don't use them in our house. In general I don't trust when companies record audio and/or video that is stored in the cloud.

I'll be keeping our security footage on local backed up drives if needed, that's it. No voice activation or always-on listening products for me thank you very much.
