Rolex GMT 1675 question - setting time backward on a non quickset watch

Hi all,

Recently acquired a GMT 1675 and am traveling to a different timezone. Since I don’t have the instruction manual that came with the 1675, I was wondering if folks could help educate me: is it ok to set the time backwards on a vintage Rolex like the 1675? What about if I need to reverse the date from the 2nd to the 1st? Any way to do that without winding the watch forward 30 days?

I will tell you that I have a 1675 and have been told it's ok to set the time in either direction as it will not damage the movement. Chime in experts, please. Nice first question BTW. Oh and post some pics, I'm sure I'm not alone wondering what your GMT looks like.

Yes you can.

You can adjust the hands in either direction without damaging the movement. With regard to the date number, however, there is no way of winding this backwards and if you've 'overshot' the date your only options are to either allow the watch to run down and stop and wait for the date to catch up, or manually wind it forwards through 30 days.

If my 1675 is dead for more than a few days, I just mark my calendar 28 or so days out and wear another watch during that time.

I'd invest the five minutes it takes to wind the date round again.

And hence my 1675 languishes with my 6694 in the box most of the time. I love it but it's not a daily for me and the non-quickset affects wearability. I shoulda bought a 16750. Or maybe I'll see about a part-trade for the grail gold model...

Hey, Dong, Gabriel and Paulie - you've got me! I've just realised that in the 52 years I've had my 1675 (bought new in 1967) I have NEVER needed to reverse the date wheel - I have only ever needed to wind it forward to adjust the date at month-ends! The advice I gave Slycke about being unable to reverse wind it was based on something I read a long time ago. Next time I adjust it I'm going to have a go at reversing the date!

On a European trip in about 1982, I bought my mother a "non-DateJust" ladies date SS watch with a plain bezel, white dial and oyster bracelet for about $600. My wife really pushed me to get a non-date model with a blue dial and jubilee bracelet. In the end my wife was correct. My mother wore the watch randomly and never bothered to adjust the date when she reset it. In reality it was the plainest, blandest Rolex I ever saw but she loved it because it was a Rolex and I bought it for her. When my mother passed away I got it back but my wife had no interesting in it. (she owned a TT ladies-Datejust with a jubilee bracelet). I turned the watch into a Frankenwatch by buying a white roman numeral dial and engine turned bezel off ebay and having a local watchmaker service it and install the new parts. It really looked nice. Gave it to my daughter and six months later it was either stolen or pawned (she wouldn't say).
