It's always struck me as odd that all Rolex's sports models have full-gold and TT versions (Sub, GMT-2, Yachtmaster and Daytona) yet Rolex don't offer the same options for the Explorer 2. (The Sea-Dweller looks similar to the Sub so I'm guessing that's why Rolex didn't produce TT or gold Sea-Dwellers).

Does anyone know the reason for this omission? I'd certainly be interested to see what a TT or full-gold Exp 2 would look like - anyone else?

While the shot of the white dial YG is stunning, the E2 should remain a SS "tool" watch, IMO.

At its current design I think the Explorer II is the least "blingable" watch in the Rolex sports line. So my answer would be no. I think it looks best in SS.

Agreed!! While it may look nice in full gold in that picture above, its "bling" factor in YG would serve no purpose to the regular Rolex buyer who, with that kind of $$$, could get something much better.

Don't really get the gold/two tone "sports" watches anyway, with the exception of the Yachtmaster where a bit of bling would seem appropriate.

Gold/two tone or platinum, work so much better on date just/dress watches IMHO.

Anyway, where do you stop, Exp II, with rubies and sapphires inset?

Totally agree - sports watches should mainly be in S/S. Then again, I've seen diamond-encrusted GMTs and Daytonas, as well as TT/full gold Subs with rubies/diamonds on the dial. If these watches didn't sell, I'd hazard a guess that Rolex would have stopped offering them a long time ago.

Now, since they've been around for years, it must mean there's demand for the bling "tool'' watch. So why not the Exp 2 one day?...

there's something about the EXP II, i like it, but i dont ever see myself buying it...this might sound naive but i dont think its an iconic rolex, like the DJ, DATE, SUB, DD, DAYTONA........however if it was in a rose gold TT that would look really nice IMO....maybe it would sway me....

I´m SOLD for this FG Explorer II!

...IMHO, I´d totally buy it over a FG Yacht-Master, even liking the FG YM aswell (well, I´d get both of them together if I could. haha

Both the Explorer I and the Explorer II are in SS only as they are "working" watches. Made to be used in harsh conditions.

There is talk that Rolex will announce a new Explorer II at the 2009 Basel show.

Can't wait to see it.
