Five Year Anniversary

So just a quick post. Five years ago I purchased my first ever Rolex. Times were different, walked into the AD, was offered an immediate 16 per cent discount if I used credit and 18 if I paid cash. This was without even asking. I was shown this new black and blue gmt and was offered the same discount. I passed, it lingered around for quite a while. The good old days.

In any event, a few pics, happy anniversary to my first, still running strong at + 1 sec per day. A simple no bullsh**t watch that just simply tells the time.

Sooo, I’m confused. Where’s the black and blue gmt?

Somebody eventually bought it, it hung around for a couple of weeks. No hype back then

Yes, that's how it was! I bought my Sub from a big AD here in Hamburg in February 1996...just walked in and bought it, for cash, DM 3,450, exactly as in the Rolex catalogue at the time. No mark-up, but no discount or Rolex "goodies". I did get two nice cups of coffee, though!

I remember very clearly spending some time peering in at the Rolexes in the window display before I went in, and they seemed to have every model. I spent some time comparing different Subs before choosing the 14060, because I didn't like the cyclops and the date on the Sea Dweller was too small. I've never regretted it. I wonder if those days will ever come back? I asked about the Daytona, and was told it was the only model to have a waiting list, even then back in 1996, at least here in Germany. My AD has zero SS models as of last week...
