NOS Insert

Pardon my ignorance, but can someone tell me what a NOS is? I know what NOS is, but if I buy this for my 1970 1680 would it be correct?

A nice mk3 but I’d say it’s too late for your 1970 watch.
NOS is new old stock (new, unused).
This is the same insert I’d expect to see on a MK4 1665 double red or a MK1 maxi 5513, for example.
For you, for this watch, I’d like to see an early MK3.

Thanks for replying. I still have a lot to learn and that why I posted this question. I’m a bit confused. There are different examples of MK3? Or the one in this ad is not really a MK3?

If one wants all original yea...I would rather have a missing pearl or pay 250$ for an old one than have one that glows...a big bright glowing dot when the hands and dial do not glow doesn’t look right IMHO

Thanks. That’s why I was confused by the NOS description. If it’s NOS, by definition shouldn’t it have the original pearl? So it sounds like the NOS term was misused in this case. Thanks for your input.

Do you have a photo of your watch? If it’s a Mk IV 1680, a Mk 3 insert would be correct

Thanks. I haven’t received it yet but it’s the one I was asking you guys about in a thread last week. Yes, it’s a MKIV 1680.

Replacement pearls (tritium) aren't rubbish! Many of these old inserts have had the pearls replaced - they weren't made to last forever. While the luminova pearls are still available from Rolex, the tritium pearls are long gone.

I believe the one you need is like that on the 1680 below. If you need help finding an insert, send me a message.

Price is pretty good assuming it's genuine.

It doesn’t look NOS to me, although it’s in really good condition. As to the pip, could the seller just mean that it looks new instead of being replaced? You should ask the seller for confirmation if u r interested in buying this. I would assume the pip would look new if it’s NOS, no?

I blame it on autoconnect.

They show up on the For Sale forum here from time to time.
This was from a couple months back.

Yes NOS should have original pearl....if it was never worn the original pip would never need to be replaced...the insert looks near NOS and some idiot put a luminova pip on it

A bigger question is the colour. From the photo it looks to me like those are actually gold numerals not silver although white balance in online photos is not always spot on. But look at them next to the pip..

In which case unless your 1680 is gold it will look all wrong - ask me how I know. (To fair the one I bought was very faded but was still slightly gold enough to a bit annoying in the long light).

To be fair the description also mentions 1680/8.
