Tudor Monte Carlo (7159) OR Heuer Carrera 2447

Hi guys
Looking for a Valjoux manual winding chrono. I have narrowed down my options to Tudor 7159 or Heuer 2447 (Just don't think I will ever be able to afford a Daytona)

I want a Valjoux chrono with motor racing history behind it. Any other good suggestion? If given the same price, which would you pick?

I have a 7159. Nice watch, but very difficult to read with the black hands on a grey dial and the busy subdials. You need good eyesight for it to be practical as something you reference to actually tell the time, as opposed to just decorating your wrist.

Well... one thing I don't like about 7159 is that I need to unscrew the crown in order to wind it.. hmm

How about a Tiger Tudor or non Tiger 79260, Panda or reverse Panda dial. They have a Valjoux movement an look like a Daytona and they were made by Rolex. You can get a nice one between $4-5k.

btw... your 7159 looks great!!

Thanks. I think you need to unscrew the crown on all Oyster Rolex/Tudor watches to wind the movement, so that probably shouldn't be a factor in your decision.

Cool.. for some reason, Tudor Tiger just doesn’t sing to me. Maybe too busy.

Also, what’s the price range I should expect for a 7159/ or a Heuer 244?

I'm a sucker for orange highlights, especially with gray. I love the way that 7159 looks. Nice watch!

I'd pick the 7159 but if you're concerned with readability or you just have a more conservative bent, the Heuer might be right for you.

Watch only is fine

Readability is seldom a chronograph's selling point, especially in low light situations. But then again I'm not sure if I'd call a 79260/70/80 too busy, especially when compared to the multi-colored dial of the Monte Carlo.

However, with all that said I think I'd go with a Heuer 2447, such a good looking watch...even though I'm a bit of a Tudor/Rolex fanboy myself.

If readability is high on your list, a Speedmaster Professional is extremely legible and the manual chronograph movement has proven itself to be tremendously strong and reliable.

Would avoid the big block, the 7750 has a rotor that is LOUD.
Both the ones you are going after are great, I would go Tudor for the date and upside value potential.
I just scratched this itch on the relative cheap by acquiring a Valjoux 72 driven 9238FA Girard Perregaux sterile dial Olimpico and it's getting a ton of wrist time.

Have owned multiple of both (and still do) and it's hard to pick one over the other. Both great watches with very different feel on the wrist. The 7159/0 is incredibly well built and slimmer on the wrist than all of the other Tudors mentioned here. The Valjoux 234 is a great movement and I don't have any issues with readability. In terms of exotic Rolex/Tudor, there's the Monte Carlo and the Paul Newman. Considering the MC doesn't require a second mortgage, it's quite compelling.

The 2447 Carrera, on the other hand, is one of the purest designs ever made and more refined in its 36mm case. You're also unlikely to find a 2447 Carrera in the same price range ($13-15K) with an original bracelet, so if having the option is important to you, something to keep in mind. While you can't go wrong with either option, I see the 2447 as the more "under the radar" selection, while the Monte Carlo is a slightly more brash conversation piece. Let us know what you end up getting!

My Big Block rotor isn't loud at all, but it is heavy. You can feel it spinning if you flick your wrist... Maybe yours needed a service.

Since the OP wants a manual wound Valjoux I don’t think rotor noise will be a concern of his :)

I sold my Apple stock for a profit in 2004 at 2 bucks because I thought the price had gone silly. Now at 300 bucks.

It taught me a priceless lesson about buying and holding, though. Unless you have a crystal ball, get in while you can if you really want it, even if you think it's a bit expensive, and just maintain.

That's served me well with watch collecting, and applies to other stuff like property, vintage cars and other collectibles.

The price will probably go up in the end. If it hasn't gone up, it's not the end.
