First Rolex Dilemma

Hi all, New here and looking to buy my first Rolex. we have a few in the family but this will be my first personal one.
I have around 9000 euros to spend, and I'm currently on the list for a Submariner Hulk (116610LV), However, the waiting list is long (I was told by the supplier he should have one for me in late 2021) so I've been thinking of filling the void with another used Rolex for the time being.

I have noticed the previous generation Yachtmaster Platinum bezel (16622) can be had for a decent chunk under list price and around the same as a new Su. its also one of the few modern Rolexes I've seen that have taken a bit of a hit off list.

What's the reasoning behind this? Simply not to the majority's taste?

Id love to get one but ideally, I don't want to lose much money should I come to sell it when my Sub allocation arrives. or could this be the next one to shoot up in value

Welcome! The 16622 can definitely be had at a discount. As long as you can get a decent deal on one, I wouldn't worry to much about what you'd lose in selling it. Although, I'd make sure it's something you really want as every time I've "settled" for something I ended up either selling it or not wearing it much. Good luck and happy hunting!

I think many people find the YM in kind of a "no man's land". It looks like a diver but doesn't have the depth rating, and is much more blingy. People looking for a diver probably don't have an interest, people looking for a dressier watch probably don't really want something that appears 'diverish'.

I think they are great, but already have a couple of divers and a dress watch, so for me it would be part of a collection, not my one and only. The Platinum dial is no longer made, so if you can get one at a good price I say go for it. Then add the LV.

Welcome to the forum. I’d never “fill the void” when I truly want a different reference

If you really like the YM, go for it. I would take a ceramic bezel Rolex over that, all day every day, but it is up to you. If you offered my the choice between a YM and a Sub I would not even thing about it for 1 second.
