Your Rolex Sleeper Hits

What are your Rolex “sleeper” - i.e., underrated or not fully appreciated watches. This could be from a pure enthusiast and/or collectibility and value proposition standpoint.

Here are a few of mine:

1) Rolex Datejust 36 mm - fluted and jubilee (especially hidden clasp). 36 mm is the classic, quintessential size. I don’t care what anyone else thinks about that.

2) 5-Digit Submariners - These look great with the slim lugs and can still be had and enjoyed at much more affordable price points than their 4-digit (5513 / 1680) counterparts.

3) Daytona Ref. 116520 - Not quite Zenith and non-ceramic. It seems these are a bit underrated in terms of value proposition. I especially like the Black dial variant (Note: I prefer the White Dial 116500 for its contrast to the ceramic dial).

I'd have to say the SeaDweller 16600. They're going for less money right now than their Submariner counterparts and they arguably are more capable and unique. The price of the 116600 (another piece I think is underrated due to it being the closest thing we have to a modern 5 digit reference) has already gone up quite a bit. I'm surprised the 16600's are still holding steady.

The 36mm DJ might be the most recognizable, if not most popular, watch of all time. How is it a "sleeper"?

Top of the list is the milgauss... I never hear enough about it or see a lot of it.

I’m sure that I’ll get flamed for this, but the HEV is a liability in my mind. Have a friend who experienced his fail a pressure test (which required service to fix HEV) and have read about others failing as well. Might be the reason these have remained low. Not sure

The en vogue watch seems to be the DJ 41 mm. I’ve also seen many a thread saying that the DJ 36 mm is a women’s watch. I respectfully say “nay” to that.

Was just about to say I think the 5 digit Sea Dwellers are unbelievable value right now comparatively speaking of course.

Even more so 18months ago - you could still pick nice examples up for around £5k to £5.5k.

Prices are starting to creep up a little though recently and are starting to hit the £6k to £7k range.

Some are up as high as £8k - £9k but I don’t know if there are many takers at those prices but I’m sure it won’t be long before they do.

Get one now before it’s too late & they start hitting £10k+

Definitely agree with this. Matte 16800s are great. Matte dial, but with quick set date and sapphire.

14060 2 liner is another great one.

That's not the first time I've heard that. I think it's pretty rare that this would happen, but anytime you have an additional opening on a case it has the potential to be a point of failure.

That said, I think the main reason is people are wary of the 14.5mm case height more than anything. But they actually wear smaller than the Submariner Date despite their dimensions on paper.

No flame, but I'd think it has more to do with the bezel being identical to the Sub. It is a great watch, don't get me wrong, but with the same bezel as the Sub it looks like Rolex forgot to put the cyclops on. The SD4K doesn't suffer from this, IMO.

2. The 116600 SD4K - big potential to skyrocket
3. 16570 Explorer II - it was the best kept secret until recently, so see that the prices are rising
4. The 14060 Submariner - the last of the 5 digit lug holes Sub breed
5. The SD43 MkI dial - the true 50th anniversary SD

116520s are hardly sleepers; try buying one. Same with five digit subs. DJs always are priced low.
