As time passes do you find your taste in watches changes?
I got my first Rolex 12 years ago, back then I wanted a breitling but went with Rolex after reading about them and everyone recommended them over breitling and I think the major factor was resale as at the time it was when I starting to taste a bit of success but wasn't quite there so resale was kind of important at the time so I went with a blue sub as I found it stood out a lot but I found Rolex to look kinda like for old people where breitling looked bigger/cooler etc,,,,,,,,,a few years later I was SOOOOO happy I didn't go with the breitling I just find them ugly and way to big now.
The next watch I loved was a datejust ii, I always wanted the tt 41mm with smooth bezel and osyter,,,,,I was going to get one 10 years ago but never did,,,,,I got one a few weeks ago and got it fluted on a jubilee,,,,,10 years ago I'd never want the jubilee or fluted now love it and can't believe I liked the oyster with smooth bezel I'm so happy I didn't get that one lol Most recently I'm thinking to change my 16613 for a 116613 and its because I got a newer black sub and love the glide clasp and size and wrist presence, initially I wanted the 16613 I liked the deeper blue but now I'm starting to like the new blue as its flashier but I know in long run the 16613 is the watch to keep its just a classic and also looks classier on wrist vs the 116613. I'm even starting to like the batman/batgirl whatever it's called when on a jubilee, I think it looks great vs the osyter, and it's got me thinking of grabbing one |

Similar story. I bought my first Rolex 10 years ago (MilgaussGV) instead of an Omega because my wife told me it will hold its value better. Then 3 years ago I saw the Deepsea Blue and had to have it. I always bought my wife one as well whenever I bought one for myself. Now, 11 Rolexes deep into my collection I catch myself dreaming about Full Gold SkyDwellers, Platinum Daytonas and Full Gold GMTs... Taste changes over time as we mature and get more and more appreciation for Rolex. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I only started "serious" watch collecting 4 or 5 years ago.
At first, I wanted to go straight into 60s Pre-moon Speedmasters (not sure what I was thinking), I did get one, but It's a huge @##!** to repair and find parts for. Next, I went into the "balanced" collection phase: A diver, a dress watch, a chrono. Next, I bought my first Rolex: 116610LN. Next, I went into the "Rolex only" phase: 116610LN 116710LN 126334 I am now into the "1 watch"-phase: I have a 228239 White gold daydate 40. This watch is so kickass it should be illegal. PS. The batgirl is great watch, get it! |

Absolutely it has changed, as does with better understanding of movements etc. First Rolex was purchesed in 1989, a TT DJ with white face, happy to say I still own and would be last to sell should I ever have the need to sell my collection. My next piece though will be a Skydweller, I love the movement. Also buying my first PM a while ago has made a big difference to what I like...yeap its now PM or not at all :)

Like my taste in women, my taste in watches have changed over time. The only thing that hasn't changed for me is my favorite drink.

Yes, in a big way. Over the last 20 years I went from steel bracelet to leather strap only back to bracelets. I went from "I would rather die than wear a rolex" to an owner of three as they are the most function and fit my wrist best.

I’m enjoying learning about watch manufacturers and their histories and stories, and have accumulated many over the past 12 years. Always come back to the sub. Always.

Of course!
When I started, leather straps called my attention Then I switched to being a metal bracelet lover. For about 2 years, I have had ZERO interest in the moonphase complication, and recently it is really interesting to me |

Yes but for different reasons mostly. I find that with my aging eyes, contrast on the watch becomes critical. The Rolex Blue and Rhodium dials seem to be very good at providing good contrast as long as the hands aren't similarly colored.

I always thought the busy Breitling/Tag style watches were gross. I have a Speedmaster (obv) but I've grown to not like it. The damn crown is so small and it's a pain to have to wind it every day. They never tell you that stuff in all the blogs and videos!
Now I'm all about gold Rolex. You can all fight for SS, I'll come grab one when you're all finally on the gold train. |

Oh yes :-)
My first luxury watch was a cartier pasha. Picked it up at an AD in Paris, that was year 2000. When the SA brought the watch to me to try on he also had a Rolex Submariner on the tray. He told me that I may consider the Rolex as too since both shared almost the same price tag. I looked at the Rolex for less than a minute and said Nah, he tried hard to convince that Rolex is better in every way possible but I was so in love with that Cartier. I've always been a one-watch-man, the Cartier served for maybe 10 years also my taste for it and for it's size which I started to see it as small! When I decided to go for my second watch this time I said to myself I'm not going to make that Cartier mistake twice, I had one address, one name one goal. Rolex. Quote:

I always liked dive watches with a lot of wrist presence. While I adored the BLRO GMT Master, I thought it's relatively puny 40mm size would make it look like a nickel strapped to my 7 3/4" wrist. So I admired it from afar, afraid to make the investment in what would surely be too small a watch. I was wearing an Omega Seamaster 45mm model with the orange bezel. I have a background in diving, even some commercial work, so a big diving watch was a natural fit for me.
Then my tastes started to change. I still preferred large-ish watches but less flamboyant than my orange Omega. I sent it in for service and requested a bezel swap to a traditional black bezel. Omega obliged and my journey towards less obtrusive watches continued. Detour: I bought my first Rolex, an early DSSD, based on some online pics and the specs. Hey, it looked like a larger Submariner so it should be perfect for me. Nope! It sat too tall on my wrist and the dial was out of proportion to the overall size. For me, the aesthetics were all wrong. I put the DSSD away in it's box for a couple years and went back to my Seamaster. When the Seamaster started to feel oversized I decided to indulge my fantasy of owning a 5-digit GMT Master even though I still feared the 40mm size would be too small. I tried on some 40mm Omegas and found they were just barely big enough for my tastes. Mostly anyway. So I took a leap of faith and traded my DSSD for a 16710 BLRO. Haven't looked back!

Yes, I bought my first Rolex in 2009 a SS black sub. After i bought it I was like “well this is my one nice Swiss watch” HAH! Man was I wrong, 11 years later I have over a dozen Swiss watches and I’m starting to get into PM models and AP’s. It’s a wormhole man. I never thought I would rock a solid gold submariner but here we are and I absolutely love it. Anyway, I could talk watches all day. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I also wear a 44.25mm Omega Speedmaster these days. My tastes change every time the wind blows these days. 40mm is fine for me, as long as the bracelet blends well with the watch case and gives it a tad more presence. I don't think anybody does bracelets as well as Rolex.

My start was an Explorer 2 (16570) black dial. It was my daily for 10+ years.
Fast forward my collection is over 20 (Rolex). My change in taste has more to do with the experience that comes from owning/wearing more pieces. In the beginning I thought jubilee bracelets look like what an old man would wear, I hated them. Now, I enjoy wearing them and appreciate them. I wanted a Daytona, before I got my first Rolex. I now own several, and although I enjoy wearing it occasionally, if I had to scale back to a one watch situation, it would not be the one (no date, no rotatable bezel, least legible, polished links, etc). So yes, taste changes- perhaps with time and age, but also experience trying different pieces. |
