Traditional Games
Serious post....
Is anybody here interested in traditional board games? I love chess, I am actually awful but I find the thinking and strategys incredibly interesting. My newest passion is for backgammon. My entire life I wondered how the game with the different coloured points was played until last year when I took it upon myself to buy a couple of books and teach myself the rules and tactics. Both can be expensive (chess text books cost a fortune alone let alone the price of a nice chess set) so I figured there might be a few members here who might be able to offer any pointers or even set up game via pm. Hey ole' DriftWood76, are you talking about traditional games like getting your date drunk so you can have some fun? Chess for this redneck family.

Like Bubba the only game of manoeuvring I know is the one he has described. I wasn't very good at that either!
As for games mrs Vapalux will tell you draughts, but the rest is up to you to work out Best of luck with your hunt for a chess champion. There has to be one on TRF! Never really got into backgammon. Best of luck Si |

I like chess becasue you must figure out your opponents strategy, adjust your own strategy, and still think five or more moves a head. Now chess is the one with the red and black checkers ain't it?

I do enjoy a good game of chess. Learning strategies and thinking ahead to capture pieces and win the game is pure fun!!!
Also enjoy the gambling game of Backgammon. You must also learn strategies and think ahead to win in this game as well!!!

Funny how times have changed. As a wee lad you could go down to the local boys club and learn markmanship or play chess. Now it is mostly basketball and other sports, which ain't bad, just how times have changed.

I'm surprised that our Bubba hasn't mentioned a word about the strip-poker he used to play with his ex-wives!!

Simple games like football in the street, cricket or going for a ride. We played Kirby for hours. All you need is a sensible size street and a ball.
table tennis, tennis. Now its all gone over to PS3 or whatever number they are on. Si |

Joe, I agree, kids today do not want to learn to play traditional games unless it's on the computer, game system or cell phone!!!

This last batch of kids have been tough due to video games, computers, cell phones, MP3 players and so on. The current four kids have all learned to water ski, jet ski, play chess, shoot, hunt, play tennis, and fish. It takes a little prodding to get them off the couch, but when they do; they enjoy it very much. The most excitement comes when they catch a nice bass. |

What I see is lots of inactive (in the community) adults. I wish some of the parents would get out of their cars and chip in. Whew, rant over.

Bill, I never said ALL children are lazy but some are. When my son was young and played baseball I was the Asst. coach of the team. As for adults that's a new ball game. Many adults become sedentary and that's to bad. This causes obesity, heart attacks and the like!!!
Now I exercise by bicycling and once in shape I'm on the bike 4-6 hours a day in the summer!!!

Well actually I'm overweight too. I plan to ride more when I stop asst. coaching.
I was referring to the parents who drop off their kids at their activities and never volunteer to help so it's the same 10 people doing all the work year after year. Still I can't complain because you can't force (or even guilt) someone to give up their time, even if the cause is good.

Bill that is definitely true, only a few do all the work so everyone can benefit. That's the way it is and always will be. What irritates me is when other people expect you to baby sit their kids so they can go leave and come back a couple hours later!!!
