Rolex CEO resigns

Interesting article on page 22 of this month's WatchTime. Apparently the CEO, Patrick Heiniger is assumed to have either made poor investment choices (Madoff, which Rolex has denied multiple times) or to have made too many lavish purchases which "started to tug too hard on the Rolex purse strings". Thought this was kind of interesting given the fact that the only reason I would resign from the position of CEO at Rolex is if I was being pushed out due to playing with the watches too often rather than doing my job Just thought this was interesting.

Somewhat old news, but yeah, he's out. Like it or not, there are more CEO's out there for the perks and bonuses more so than they are for the love of the product. These bad boys are recreation for most of us, but if it was a business I was conducting I'd probably be tired of it being on my shoulders after 16 years as well.

Exactly. When you reach CEO level, your caring and passion for your products or watches in general flew the coop long, long ago. Your focus is on maximizing your bonus and compensation, and your company's revenue. Your head is in spreadsheets and your calendar, and you're on your Blackberry at 11pm. You fight to stay on top and keep the back-stabbers that want your job off your back. Who to oust, who's head to step on, and who to bring in to watch your back and push your politics. You're driven by profits, greed, and narcissism.

If anyone thinks that a job at Rolex involves playing with watches all day long, and sitting around thinking about what the next Sub bezel will look like, you are very much dreaming. My dream would be this:

Frank's First Day CEO Schedule

09:00am Coffee with the chief GMT-Master designer. Give him a piece of my mind regarding a new Pepsi bezel, and bring back that red hand, or you're fired.

10:00am Pick out a solid gold DD from our showroom as a congratulatory "Welcome to Rolex as CEO" gesture. How nice of the board! Get it sized, and have Engineering set it to +/-0 sec. per day accuracy.

11:00am Take a break from the tough morning so far, and spend the hour admiring the DD and playing with the box and booklets.

12:00pm Nice, long lunch with my hot, new secretary. Present her with a gold DJ with diamond hour markers and bezel as my own welcome gift. She can thank me later, after work.

02:00pm Study up on the latest trends by reading the current WatchTime and some back issues. Gotta stay current!

03:00pm Uh oh, scratches on my GMT-IIC PCLs! The heck with getting them polished - hey, Engineering is busy! Just go grab a new one from supply.

04:00pm Meeting to plan the next Daytona. Listen to what Marketing and Engineering proposes, then nix all of it and send them back to the drawing board. Grab a new white dial and black dial Daytona on the way out to complete my collection and help me to make executive decisions on the follow-up meeting.

05:00pm Quitting time! It's been a tough first day - grab a few martinis before my first-class flight from Geneva to the US for dinner tomorrow with Danielle Lloyd to talk Rolex watches, and be on hand to supervise her next bikini shoot. Gotta make sure the Daytona is positioned correctly!
