Due to regulation changes, the engine must last at least the qualifying laps AND the following race. This is done to prevent teams with very deep pockets to use a very special engine just for qualifying and pop in another engine for the race.

My BMW Z4 has the SMG transmission (paddles on the wheel) and it is superb. The SMG was designed for the F1 many years ago. Never had so much fun in a car.

Great information on these awesome machines.

that's interesting I have just read that they can use a ninth engine but then would get a driver penalty

“It’s eight engines for the whole year. A driver will only incur a penalty if he uses a ninth engine. So the teams can use the engines as they like. There’s no three consecutive race rule because there doesn’t seem to be a need for it any longer. The engines will not have to do three complete events now.
In the past, as you know, the two-race engine was used only on Saturdays and Sundays. Now, for 17 races, the eight engines will have to do the three days of each Grand Prix. What the teams will do is to have a Friday engine that’ll probably do the first four races or something of that nature. They’ll then take the engine out and use another one for Saturday and Sunday. All we’ve got to do, - it’ll be extra work - is to make sure that these engines remain sealed and are untouched.”
quote from Charlie Whiting

Not sure about the idea of the driver with most wins deciding the outcome of the championship - thats going to be difficult for teams that have equal ability drivers like Ferrari and favour other teams like Renault where Alonso is number one. I may have a bet on Alonso being world champ this year. Also going to bring in team orders into play - even though this is illegal.

I like the slicks coming back...but other than that, boo. F1 should be about innovation and technology, not limiting everyone to the same standard. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the driver having more influence but at the end of the day it's racing. If you lose a foot race to someone, are you going to tell them they are limited to running at a certain pace or are you going to train to become faster?

Wow, Senna at Donington was simply amazing - as it's my local track, I can't wait for the British GP to return there next year! They're doing some pretty extensive work to bring the track up to date, I just hope they can finish it in time!
