Insipid Sayings, Cliches, & Idiomatic Expressions

No surprises here. This is a post for insipid sayings, cliches, idiomatic expressions and whatever other crazy jargon (arcane & commonly used) you might have picked up.

I can tell you unhesitatingly that I do not recall ever "battening down the hatch." WTH is that anyway?!

I hate with every fibre of my being the expressions: 24/7, touch base, in any way shape or form and blue sky thinking

Not really a cliche or idiom, but here are a couple that bother me when used.

"PIN Number" - It is just PIN! Why do I want your Personal Identification Number Number?

"reiterate" - It is just iterate! I know that reiterate is a word and means to "say something again", but people always us it incorrectly around me for some reason. You want to redo something that is being redone already?

Some that make the hairs on my clean-shaven neck stand up

"Nuff said"

In response to thank you...
"No Problem"

"With all due respect..."

"To be honest..."

What's always bugged me is seeing "I need your advise...." It's ADVICE. When you ask someone for advice, you are wanting them to advise you. Why not say, "Please advise me about this..."

And what's up with "Your" and "you're?" My 9 year old daughter knows how to use each correctly....

Okay, I'm getting off track with these - more grammar issues than idioms/sayings. Sorry!

How about:

"Deep down he's really quite shallow."
"Life's tough, you're lucky to come through it alive."
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy."

Ack! Call the grammar police because that stuff makes me cringe as well.

Sorry... should have said "That stuff effects me as well. It makes me feel as if I'm going to loose my mind"

Eight, out of ten, well educated people fail to recognize simple grammatical nuances.

This grammar question is often botched:

Which is correct?

The white of the egg IS yellow.

OR

The white of the egg ARE yellow.

Neither. White is not yellow.

I agree with these completely and want to add "For Your Information," and it's abbreviation (FYI) to the top of the list. Cold, impersonal and meaningless expression. Why would you bother sending someone a particular message if it wasn't for their information? Since it is for their information, say what needs to be said without prefacing it!

What about slang? Certain words are also clearly indigenous to certain areas, and since this is an international forum, what expressions are popular in "your neck of the woods" and/or with your peer group?

"At the end of the day" irritates me to no end; if one more jerk politician uses that phrase my shoe might go through the television. A few years back it was "gravitas".

Some from the customer service hot air department:

"We apologize for the inconvenience"

"Your call is very important to us"

"We're not happy until you're happy"

"We are committed to your total satisfaction" (unless, of course, you aren't satisfied)

Most overused phrase in the world: Ground Zero

Most stupid phrase in the world: I thought to myself (Who else do you think to, I'd like to know.)

Two most common errors I see on watch forums (or fora, as either is correct): Your instead of You're and Piece of Mind instead of Peace of Mind

Most insensitive phrase in the world and one often used by other watch enthusiasts to describe Rolex owners: Drink the Kool-Aid

This last phrase gets thrown around a lot on another watch forum many of us frequent. Turns out one of the forum members actually lost a friend at Jonestown.

Not that long ago, people. Some of us remember.

Pet peeve: If you THINK such and such, you've got another THING coming. It's If you THINK such and such, you've got another THINK coming. Duh.

Jeannie

The white of the egg is white.

Don't know how many of us get caught on THIS one.

And...

Pixburgh! Come on, people! (I guess that if they don't know how to spell it properly, they can't pronounce it properly, either ; )
