Hello,

I think you should start with the Sub. It is the most versatile. You can always add more watches to your collection in the future :+)

Welcome to the Forum :+)

I like the idea of getting multiple to start out, but the DJ is incredible looking and would be very nice to wear when I have to dress up.

As of now, I have an Apple Watch and a Tissot-T touch solar.

Thoughts?

Really a great set of questions regarding the purchase of either Rolex sub or DJ, or get Omega Seamaster 300m and or tudor Black bay. The issue is a question of where you are in your collecting. What kind of collector are you? The omega, and the Tudor can be purchased for less than retail on the pre owned market. Starting with these types of watches is a good way to collect initially, because it's a less expensive way to enjoy multiple watch styles and multiple brands. You buy them, sell them, trade them. The Issue with Rolex watches is that as the years have gone along the popularity for the brand has increased, you can't buy steel Rolex on the secondary pre owned market for much of a discount, in fact the secondary market price is greater than MSRP for most steel sports. therefore you just have to pay up for the luxury item. The Rolex, either model, sub or DJ will cost more to purchase, but should retain value or increase in value.

There’s a broad stroke at work here. In the 80s the DJ 41 didnt exist and numerous iterations have been introduced by Rolex as that’s what businesses
do. We’re consuming and they’re retailing. What makes things complicated
is how we best use our hard-earned cash. Someone will, at some point, want
to trade in their old for a newer version and the real problem shows it’s ugly
head interfering with the emotional reason someone would buy any DJ or any
watch from any maker for that matter.

SeaMaster’s - there’s a few of them. Tudor Bay’s - there’s a few of them. Chronomats, Hublot fusions, Panerai Luminors and the list goes on.

Ultimately, you’re right, if someone wants to buy whatever they should just buy
it.

In the case of Rolex, when the DJ41 dude wants an upgrade after say 10 years,
he’ll find the trader won’t offer much citing ‘not a good seller’ and the DJ dude
will perceive someone’s got vaseline on one hand and one hand is undoing his
belt.

I have a 16233 champagne dial on jubilee dated 83 box and service paper. It
didn’t come with an original box nor papers so being new to the collecting game
I too started with a DJ. But the prices of DJs 21st century warrant a smarter
look at what is now 7-9k and a ROI watch is in that ball-park.

A conversation that will go on forever.

When I realise how to post photos I’ll shoot some up.

Have a great day

Buy the watch that sings to you! Either look great.

Unsubscribe from the forum and banish all thoughts of watches. Look back in 10 years at this message and think of me when you realize how many thousands you saved when a stranger on the internet warned you off an expensive addiction. Smile when you tell yourself the money you put instead into stocks, paid for your new house and sports car.

Just kidding

I’d say spend a solid couple of hours at an AD/grey with the biggest collection you can try out on your wrist, try the diver chronos and complications. Take pictures so you can see later what you like on your wrist. Then sleep on it. Or... Go with the DJ since it seems to sing to you.

Regardless of brand, i tend to think given i have the funds, id get the more expenive ONE first then get the cheaper ones to supplement in the future

Harder to save up 10k for the next watch rather than two increments of 5k

Go with the DJ41 blue fluted jubilee (or smooth if funds are limited), and you will never regret it. DJ is an iconic Rolex model suitable as a dress, and sport watch. DJ better than Sub or GMT as first watch in a collection, or as an only one watch for a person who also needs his watch to be suitable as a dress, and occasions watch in addition to sport all rounder. Buy it from an AD to establish history, then after a while visit and put your name on the waiting list for a Sub, or GMT. If you have a collection of 3 Rolex. DJ, Sub, GMT you've done well. After that you can branch out to other brands like Omega, IWC, if you want. This is how I would do it. Important note: before you start up with this collecting thing I suggest you sit with yourself and think of what you are embarking on thoroughly. This is an ADDICTION. You will never recover unless you have a very strong will.
