Servicing a Watch These Days

I called the RSC in New York today regarding a mid-80s DateJust that I'm interested in getting serviced. It is a family piece and I'm not sure when it last saw attention. The Customer Service fellow told me that the RSC is closed and they don't know when it will open again, but that I could take it to my local AD (in Wash DC) who would send it to Pennsylvania for service.

Does this seem like an option you all would feel comfortable with pursuing? I'm not familiar with the PA facility.

Thanks!

I would ship it to Dallas. Excellent crew and they're open.

Mid 80’s ............ DO NOT send it to a Rolex Service Center !

They will replace the tritium dial and hands, thus destroying the originality and sentimental value.

I would suggest using a specialized vintage watchmaker. Many post their work here on TRF like LAWW, Rikki, RolliWorks, etc....

I agree with this. If you send it to RSC you need to be very specific about how you want them to work on your watch. Also, the PA RSC is where they do the training, so your watch might be worked on by a student. I don't say that to discredit them, it's just the reality.

You might call back RSC NYC on Monday to double-check that information. RSC NYC returned to work about a week ago. I had sent them my watch back in March, and they just returned it to me on Tuesday. It arrived on Wednesday (and went back to them again today, lol, because they didn't quite fix the problem). Mine was a warranty repair, though -- so maybe they're prioritizing those for now.

Servicing a Watch These Days

I live in the DC area as well and I’m not giving any of my watches to the ADs here to ship...when they need a servicing I’ll mail them myself likely to the Dallas RSC.

+1 ... same goes for Panerai if you send them older models that have tritium dials and hands.

Most all watch brand service centers will remove the tritium and replace it with luminova service parts. They will not save the old parts, nor send them back to you. They will not work on the watch unless the tritium parts are removed.

Find a reputable watch smith, many do a way better job than the service center.

The RSC in Lititz PA has been servicing the watches from the listed RSC's for decades. They are co-located with Rolex Technicum, the world premier watchmaker school operated by Rolex.

Many who sent their watches to Dallas, Beverly Hills, or NYC simply had a middleman because Litiz did the work; they have always done the over-volume work.

I'm in the DC area too, the tiny jewel box used to perform service onsite, and I was just at Liljenquist & Beckstead - Official Rolex Jeweler in Tysons and they have a certified technician that does service on site.

I don't see the problem with having students work on a Rolex in a Rolex owned school.

As long as they do not polish the midcase, one overenthousiastic student and you have a problem with an overpolished case......
