116610 vs 114060

Hello all,

As a newbie, I have 2 questions that require the view of veterans.

1) any view on 116610 vs 114060 as a first watch
2) what would be the second one you would by

My current plan is to buy a 114060 (simple dial, all time classic, and a notch less expensive than the date) and a GMT2 BLNR (richer, discontinued and more expensive).

Appreciate your help :)

114060 is the best watch ever made, in my humble opinion.

Perfect for everyday use and an icon of modern life.

If that’s your long term plan you’d have a great 1-2 combo and you have found enlightenment.

I much prefer the 114060 for it’s clean aesthetic and nod to the original.

Six digit GMT is too similar to a six digit sub. For a second watch I’d go for a five digit gmt or sub or maybe a six digit DJ or MG.

I would not spend on a date just even if it is much less expensive...

Get the sub date. I mean, people like to have these discussions but having a date is objectively a very useful function of a watch period. Even for those that can remember the date, there will be times you need it and it’s there. The date does not alter the lines of the watch and both are instantly recognizable as a sub. The reality is unless you are only using the sub to dive, the sub date is the one to have. I mean if your one of these folks that need to be tethered to their cell phone lest they have a panic attack (I’m not one of these and often leave my home without my phone) it’s still easier to have the date/time on the wrist.

I prefer the ND version of the Submariner. I like the balanced dial. I do not need a date but if one comes on a model that I am interested in then I am Ok with that. I recently sold my ND Submariner as I prefer my Tudor Black Bay Noir more and consider it to be a better watch for the money. I do have a Hulk and a YG Submariner so I have the Rolex dive watch represented in my collection.

The original Sub, 114060

The 114060 is the quintessential Rolex in my opinion.
A GMT would be a great addition down the road.

I like the cleanliness of the 114060 dial, but for me I chose the 116610 for the following reasons;

1) I intend that the Sub will be an everyday wearer and I've found over the years I use the date function a lot.

2) I already had the 214270 which is obviously a ND piece.

If you don't need a date, plan to get the GMT which has a date anyway, then sure the 114060 will be a fantastic timepiece in your collection.

Don't buy the Submariner (no date) if you really want the Submariner date because it is a little bit cheaper because you will regret it later.

I would suggest waiting on the second watch, no hurry.

I agree. My first (and only) rolex is a 114060, and my next will probably be a DJ41 (fluted/jubilee).

Good choice. Check out the DJ36 too. I got the DJ41 but with hindsight I think it looks kind of wrong on the wrist.

From now on I may stick to Sports = 40 and dress = 36.

my coworker has a dj36 and we both thought its just a tad too small for me unfortunately (i am a pretty tall guy). Ive tried the 41s on before and thought they looked right on my wrist. I also wear a suit maybe once a year so a dress watch would be a dust collector, for me its mostly t shirts and denim :)

I see your point.

And what about the HULK 116610LV as a second watch instead of the Batman? that would make for a completely different look IMO

(I just like the new wider lugs better)

Get the 114060! Beautiful, clean and highly legible dial! Timeless and classic on a fantastic bracelet. I´ve never cared for date complications and the cyclops, but that's just my personal opinion!

I got the 116610LN six months before the 114060 and that worked for me. I know it's not common to have both in a small Rolex collection but IMHO this is the best pair they offer in their whole lineup so it makes sense to me.

Like others have said, the 114060 is a fantastic watch. I just picked mine up last week. perfect first Rolex if you intend to buy more or perfect if this is going to be your only one.

Out of the 2 Subs, definitely the 114060! It really is stunning. As a second I would say either a GMT on jubilee or a DateJust on jubilee, obviously with the size that suits you best but I prefer the 36 to the 41 because of the proportions and my wrist size.

Out of interest what’s your wrist size? I’m 7” so could go either way but I find the dial on the 41 a bit too spread out of late.

If I could keep one watch out of my collection it'd be the 114060. I think it's the best modern Rolex made. I have a 116610LV and it's great but the 114060 is just better.
