depends on the watch and especially the seller.
if it's one of the TS then paper doesn't mean as much. |

The only reason for papers for me is more peace of mind that the watch is less likely to be stolen. Yes it could have been stolen with the box and papers, but I would hazard a guess most Rolex thefts are off the wrist.
That said I have bought older pieces without papers. |

For newer watches, I prefer to have everything. For older (discontinued/vintage), I couldn't care less about papers if the watch is in good shape.

But only to those willing to pay for them and this guy would not.

Bought my 16610 Rehaut from a guy in Texas and he had all the papers hang tags & bezel protector, but he said he bought it in Hong Kong on a business trip. I was leery until he sent me photo's of the RSC New York service he had done in 2016 and that told me it's the real deal.

Would always prefer with papers (and box). May make an exception if it is a rare, vintage, quality piece from a reputable seller.

I appreciate everyone for the feedback. I think I am going to hold off and look for a better deal, one with box and paper. Even though I buy my watches to wear and will most likely never sell, I think I would rather have a full set to give myself a peace of mind. I must admit, I am a little skeptical when modern watches do not come with a warranty card. I rather know the history of the watch and I do not want the hassle of going to an AD to authenticate it. Maybe if the discount was more, I would feel more justified to purchase it. The search continues.......

Yes, and I have, a few times, and would do so again if it were the right watch at the right price, but with due diligence of course.

I can only buy without papers if i don't have the intentions of selling and it must be from a trusted seller.

What about if the watch does not come with the original papers but has that paperwork from Rolex, the authentication paperwork, that they charge approx $150 for? Is that adequate or does that not fly the same as original papers? If it's a question of authenticity, does it matter which papers are included? I imagine if the watch is vintage, there would be some amount of loss if the warranty is not the original.

I am going to agree with the people who are saying yes to papers here. In the vintage market you might be hard pressed to find a watch complete with papers, but you might also be hard pressed to find a untampered with watch in good working order. In the modern market (for me) papers and boxes are a must. Will you ever feel sure that you didnt spend 15K on a super fake without them?

If it's from a reputable source, I'll happily buy without papers or box. I've found it makes about as much of a dollar difference on the resale as it does on the purchase.

Too bad they stopped the papers years ago and now all you get is a plastic warranty card. The old papers were neat with the stamp. I frankly would not care about the plastic card where the warranty has run if the price is competitive for what I am buying.

For the extra 10%, I would buy the other one with full set.

I trust DavidSW, so I'd consider it (but probably still would pay more a complete set), but wouldn't do it from most. The other issue is age of the watch. I'd assume you are footing the bill for any issues, even if it is new; definitely something to consider, but on the flip side, how often does one need the warranty during the warranty period? Need is the key word, I don't mean people sending their watch in because it is losing 3.5 seconds a day vs 2. The other thing to consider is down the road if you ever want to sell it yourself, if you haven't sent it in to Rolex and received "new" papers, you're gonna take a bath in that re-sale.

I purchased my watch purposely without papers. Didn’t get a great discount over another newer 16613 but I bought it no papers because I knew if I had papers I’d be more worried about it’s valuation instead of enjoying the watch for what it is.
