Love the Submariner in any flavor. I've tried GMT's, EXPII's. The 114060 is the one I keep going back to. Having said that, I haven't had one in almost one year. It's been a 116622, which is similar. Three hands, date and rotating bezel. Doesn't mean I won't go back at some point

It was either a Submariner 5513, Submariner 14060m (two liner), GMT-Master II 16710 or Explorer 114270 for me as a first proper watch.

I went with the Explorer as I have small wrists (6.7 inch) and I like the 3 / 6 / 9 dial. Probably the most uncluttered looking and most versatile (formal wear, casual wear, etc.)

Never owned a black dial sub. No date came close.

Reason being, I like watches with a bit of character or colour.

Black dial sub is a classic, of course, but it’s a bit generic and everyone has one.

A matte dial sd4k, absolutely yes, or 5513 yes!

I do have a few black dial divers and other watches. Just pick watches with something unique about them.

First time I courted a Sub I chose a Blancpain. Second time I chose a Yachtmaster.

The Sub is a fine watch but everyone has them and its the most prolific poseur watch I know. Everyone has one and the first line of defense in comparison is the water resistance.... as if more than 1% of their owners actually dive with them. An OP is every bit the tool watch of a sub if you go by how they actually get used. EVERYONE has one. That makes it less interesting to me.

Funny story, it was only about 4 or 5 years ago that I was offered a no date or date sub in the case at 20% off on the date and 25% off on the no date.... boy has that changed. I went with the Bathyscaphe because emotionally it just resonated and at the time nobody had one.

Never have any interest in the regular sub either.

The black dial and black bezel are too monotonous and generic. From a distance most people can’t distinguish it from any other sub look-alike.

A big part of the Rolex ownership experience is the brand recognition, and I fear on the regular sub that brand recognition has been severely diluted by all the copycats and wannabe’s in the market.

Have a sub - a must for any Rolex collection. The clean dial, all black, also goes with everything. There is a reason it is the most popular watch ever!

my first rolex was a pre-ceramic TT sub it was amazing, I got the opportunity not too long ago to buy the updated version and really didn't like it. Mostly because their a little to plain for me now, no nostalgic feel to them.

My story is a little different ...

The six digit Submariner is a reference that I just didnt pay any attention to. Sure I knew what it was. The history etc etc, but I always viewed other Rolex offerings as more interesting, or what have you.

Then, Feb 23 / 2017 came ... the TRF James Bond Submariner giveaway ... and I was the lucky winner!!!

I can honestly say, it's one of my favorite Rolex. It wears beautifully, it's pure, simple Rolex DNA is tough to beat.

I get that it's not for everyone and that's what this thread is all about, but I love this reference

I Have a yacht master 116622 blue dial and a Sd4k 116600. A sub could have covered a middle ground between these two but I went a different route for a few reasons:

1) I like to be a little different and don't like to have too many of the more "common" references (obviously a sub is a great watch, that's WHY they atr so popular, so no disrespect to the sub)

2) I prefer the more tapered cases of the Sd4k and YM vs the modern sub. A 5 digit sub appeals but I've just never taken the plunge

3) I already had some standard watch collection staples such as the speedmaster so didn't want to end up with a generic collection of the most popular references

30 years circling around mostly with Rolex but also sidesteps to other brands. At the end I always come back to the sub. It is what it is....

114060 in my humble opinion is the best Rolex reference ever. So clean and so solid on the wrist. I had so many different watches over the years and always go back to it.

The super case is just too large for me; I've owned two Subs both 14060 and 114060. The 114060 was too large and the 14060 was two menial. I ended up with my Yacht-Master which fits and looks better imho. On a rubber strap it transforms from a fashion watch to a work horse.

1. Agreed. The Sub dial is very small.
2. The tapered case of the SD43 is actually more graceful.
3. I prefer how the SD43 bezel has small hash indicators that go ALL THE WAY around the bezel — unlike the Sub. This is an often overlooked detail and hard to unsee.

So I will likely never purchase a Sub.

My first Rolex was a 116610LN. I always wanted one but ended up not loving how it wore/looked. It kind of looked like wearing a square shaped watch to me. Ended up selling for a Rhodium YM and finding a nice SD4k which I wear 90% of the time now. My only regret is selling my first Rolex although I enjoy the SD4k much more!

Great story - would love to see a pic of the 1016. Classic

I wanted a Hulk 4 years ago. I had the YM 116622 as my only Rolex and fancied a second less dressy sports piece

I called my local AD and they had a Hulk in stock. I went to see it, tried it on, let it speak to me. I didn't like the shape of the lugs. The watch looked almost square. I passed. I also had the chance to closely see a Sub 114060 from a work colleague, same problem.

The following year I was lucky enough to try the SD43, it looked and felt perfect, I took it home with no hesitation. It's my favorite sports steel Rolex.

I probably have a couple of thousand dives (Stopped logging them long ago) and the deepest I have been is 100 meters. I was wearing two dive computers and am unlikely to repeat that stunt again.

I just prefer the more toned down look of the sub. But the YM is a close second.

Not to disparage the Sub, I can see the appeal, it’s just not for me.

I went for the 42mm Panerai submersible but if I was to go for another dive watch, the yachtmaster would definitely be top of the list.

Love the 6 digits and the lugs are actually one of the reasons I love them so much. Just gives it that tool watch/sporty look and provides great wrist presence. Separates itself from others in the line like the GMT. There is something about many of the watches I don’t like. Big numbers on gmt, busy dial on the sky-dweller, don’t like the look of any of the YMs except the black dial 42. Any watch with Roman numerals or diamonds. Do not get the bezels on the explorer II. Air king with the huge numbers. Watches smaller that 39 look to small to me. When I look at the sea-dweller, I just think not a sub, but so close. Almost forgot, all time I don’t get watch is the Milgauss for me. Sorry if I missed any! If we all liked the exact same watches, that would be boring!

I took a good hard look at a Sub LN and a Sub LV back when the AD had more than on of each in stock, and a small discount was available. I really liked the LV, but the sunburst was a tiny bit off putting.

However they were just too similar to my GMTIIc to be interesting to me.

DSSD (JC) - loved the gradient dial and somewhat limited nature of the JC however, the watch is just a massive beast on small wrists. Way too top heavy and is like a dinner plate on my wrist.

SD4K was my choice...
-classic looking just like a Sub

but more importantly these are all the things that the Sub does not have
-shapely lugs
-full minute counter around the entire bezel
-4000 ft depth rating
-no cyclops makes for nice clean dial
-matte dial (instead of glossy)
The reasons here are the exact same reasons I chose a SD4k 116600. I love the classic case shape and lack of a cyclops.

I always thought that the Sub would be my first Rolex when I started to learn about watches and Rolex. Why? Because you know, Sub and James Bond and all that.

Looks great with everything and is THE Rolex.

Well that was until I tried one on. I instantly felt a disconnect. Tried one again a little while later and realised it just didn’t look great on my wrist. Too big and thick for me.

Complete opposite with the 36mm Explorer 1 which then did become my first Rolex and I love it.

The “dive watch” space in my collection (not that one has to have a dive watch... especially as I can barely swim let alone dive ) will probably be filled by a BB58 (Blue) at some point seeing as it’s thinner than a sub and only 39mm.

Sometimes the watch just looks different on your wrist than it does on pictures (in my case the guys in the pictures all must have slightly larger wrists than mine)

Who decided in the end not to buy a Sub and why?

I declined a black subC recently because I really want a hulk. I have a bit of regret sometimes but the Hulk is what I truly want.
